I worked at Lawson Products (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great if you are pals with management.

    Cons

Management enforced draconian non compete clauses in the contract, ruining lives of many former reps, some of whom were fired for refusing to become employees, rather than keeping contractor status. Customers fleeing in droves. Products that are no longer the best, yet still expensive.

    Advice to Management

    None.

    Pros

    Good pay
    Nice benefits
    They have Union
Good hard working team members in the warehouse
    Nice area good location
    Thats all

    Cons

Management doesn't care about the employees. Tenure doesn't matter to management. Management doesn't have a clue on how all positions work in the warehouse. And when an employee quits instead of hiring someone to fill the position they have other employees doing job function that they are not getting paid for, nor is in the job description that they applied and hired for.

    Advice to Management

Corporate should should look into why tenured employees are quiting and they can't get temps to become permanent. Management really needs to get in tune with the current employees before the Southern DC becomes no more!

    Pros

Was THE company to sell for when I started in 1997
The best product line, training, engineering help, - agents were treated like rock stars, you could literally call corporate and ask to speak to Sid Port (president and founder) and he answered his own phone!
Top management reviewed your paycheck, and occasionally wrote a little note.
You were respected - they knew where the money came from!

    Cons

New management tried to make it Staples/Office Depot, cut training, product engineering built an imaginary wall between corp. and the sales force.
Constant turnover in district managers ( I had 5 different ones in 16 yrs) the last one I was assigned to before I left wasn't allowed to work my territory! Big help!?
SAP integration almost crippled the company, lost a lot of customers and sales reps in the process - you can't sell product they can't ship or bill or pay you for.
I waited 2 yrs to write a review as part of my succession agreement
I was with Lawson for 16 yrs, they have had to replace my successor twice in the 2-1/2 yrs since
Transition from Independant Agent to co. employees was very poorly planned disaster

    Advice to Management

Learn from the past, but take a good look at what used to work - it still might work.
I honestly thought the Port family would have sold it by now.
A lot of people were hurt, treat them better, remember where you paycheck comes from, and it's not from payroll!

I worked at Lawson Products full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I can't think of one positive thing to say. Government team director arrogant and demeaning, Engineering dept. knows less about product than new hires, basically flip through catalog to find products if not there they send you to specials which you cannot contact if you have been there less than a year. ridiculous strategies.

    Cons

BDM's offer no help, instead suckle off the hard work of the individuals that actually bring revenue to the company. There is no accountability for BDM's.

    Advice to Management

The training provided by the leaders in Chicago is a joke you all spend way to much on the top eight products and transactional sales. Focus more on VMI and what you profess separates Lawson from the competition.

    Pros

Good Products and people at corporate that care but often are unable to help due to policies.

    Cons

100% commission. 100% funded by you no gas, car, clothing, entertainment, or other reimbursement. Push you to purchase samples to show customers but you have to buy the samples and pay shipping. Prices higher than competitors in the same market. YOUR commission has to be cut in order to get sales and then it hardly pays to go to customers due to automotive expenses.

    Advice to Management

Give all reps car allowances like you do in California. Look at pricing in different markets and lower them without starving out the salesperson. Get the managers to learn the complete sales process from cold call to install and maintain so they can support the sales force. I mean ALL the managers DSM to national. Choose samples to send o reps that everyone can sell then send enough to give out to customer to try. Your profit margin is plenty high to be able to do this.
