I worked at LeapFrog full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Talented and friendly coworkers who believe in the mission and are incredibly passionate about quality. A long history of great products and a respected brand that has educated and entertained children for decades. The worker bees truly care about the end user.

    Cons

Morale cannot get any lower. The leadership team is either completely incompetent or is purposely sinking the company so that they can cash out and retire. Marketing has run the company for many years with no creative or technical counter weight to balance them out. Ridiculous production schedules and a copy cat mentality ensure that this company is always a few years behind the latest hot trend. An abundance of out of touch cooks running the kitchen means that decisions get made as slowly and stupidly as possible.

    Advice to Management

Have some accountability and fire the CEO, CMO, CFO and head of sales. Allow talented people with technical or creative backgrounds to have a voice. Stop letting out of touch marketing toy people run the company straight into the ground. Stop making crappy confusing commercials that don't communicate the product strengths and LOWER YOUR PRICES. Consumers are savvy and broke so stop trying to sell them magic beans that cost more than a 4 course meal.

I worked at LeapFrog (More than a year)

    Pros

The people are great - talented, dedicated, passionate: Simply great co-workers on whom you can rely on and from whom you can learn much. Loved working with every single one of them. The company mission: "Helping children to reach their full potential" is very valid and something that I was proud to work for.

The work-life balance was really nice, benefits good and middle management admirably solid.

    Cons

However, the executive leadership leaves a lot to be desired and it seems that they had no strategy and no good idea how they wanted to take the company to 21st century. They seemed to be stuck in really backwards patterns and did not ever take their blinders off... Such a shame - the company with such a potential was pretty much driven to the ground.

    Advice to Management

Wake up to the 21st century - don't try to compete where it's impossible (tablets) but bring the products that are already excellent (reading platforms, educational toys) to perfection and innovate!

I worked at LeapFrog full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly, fun place to work. Ability to balance family and work is easy at LF. The staff is young, creative and hard-working

    Cons

Management doesn't know that to do with the company. Has no direction and continually makes poor decisions.

    Advice to Management

It's too late now but the CEO should've stepped down a few months ago. Hope a good company buys it?

I worked at LeapFrog full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - The mission is great: what can be better than helping kids learn through fun?

    - Incredibly talented co-workers that are very friendly and always willing to explain things.

    - Lots of opportunity for ownership and wearing many different hats.

    - You will learn a lot in this job.

    - Career opportunities after working here are pretty good.

    Cons

    - Horrible work-life balance as engineers, working 7 days a week is often typical for half the year.

    - Terrible pay compared to other places in the bay-aream and a large percentage of your salary is tied up in bonuses. Bonus compensation is not guaranteed each year and is tied to the company's goals. Meaning, even if you work incredibly hard and do your job exceptionally well, you will not be given your bonus unless the company as a whole meets their goals.

    - Pretty much, zero perks. No free food, no gym membership, and very few company events.

    - Senior management is a complete mess and there's a lot of politics amongst them that hinders great work from being done.

    - Senior management is more focused on getting money than making something great. As a result, many of the products are far less innovative than what the teams are capable of delivering. Rehashes of old products or cheap knock-offs of existing products are often the tasks at hand.

    - Engineering lacks any senior leadership, and as a result has no voice in terms of executive decision. Instead you're treated more like an expendable resource rather than a valued contributor. As a result of this, many engineers have jumped ship in recent years.

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most people here love what they do and are passionate about bringing educational toys and games to support children's growth and development.

    Cons

The past year has worn passionate people down, driving morale lower than I thought it could ever go. Most are holding on to their jobs for dear life or are using every opportunity to get out. There are clear political and hierarchical relationships that allow certain people to move up and others at bay. No room for growth, unless of course you happen to be part of the club. Unlike it's mission statement, LeapFrog does not want every employee to "reach their full potential."

    Advice to Management

Trust and listen to your teams. Don't pay contractors and outside agencies to provide you with expensive, outdated ideas.

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of talented people really trying to make terrific fun and educational products for children

    Cons

Virtually no leadership and a Board of Directors who obviously don't care about the brand or they would have asked for CEO and CMO resignations over a year ago.

    Advice to Management

Shame on the top execs who should have stepped down a year ago. Stop thinking about yourselves and do the right thing by your employees and the great company brand before you run it into the ground.

    Pros

    The people, the passion, Canada.

    Cons

Management. It is all about politics. I gave 9 years of my life to this company and when they moved me to a person that was all about politic... I got laid off. Coincidence????

    Advice to Management

Stop listening to the wrong people. What you hear is not always what really going on.

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working on products for kids is fun, and the people who work at LeapFrog share a passion and enthusiasm that only comes from making things that do some good in the world.

    Cons

A technology company led by marketing and finance. There is no technology leadership, and it shows. The engineering organization is a chaotic mess and has been for years. Product decisions are made with zero understanding of feasibility. Leadership consistently asks for more than can be accomplished, then blames product failures on poor execution by the hard working team who busts their butts year after year chasing the impossible.

    Advice to Management

It's time to recognize that you're in over your heads. If this is going to be a company that makes great, innovative products, then you need to start treating it like a TECHNOLOGY company, bring on a CTO, and LISTEN to engineering. Despite repeated protestations to the contrary, LeapFrog is doomed to repeat the failures of Ultra and LeapTV because you have not learned any lessons from those disasters. Stop listening to your gut, and spend some money on research (hint: if the research says people won't buy it, maybe it's a sign you should scale back on the quotas...). Show some accountability at the leadership level for the major mistakes of the past few years by shedding the HIPPOs.

I worked at LeapFrog full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great products, most of the people are stellar, flexible schedule, fun workspace, good area to work in, centrally located.

    Cons

It can get political real fast! The company has not been doing well lately and it seems moral is low.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on what you are good at and stop trying to go for the older crowd. Leapfrog will always be a toy company for the 7 and under crowd.
