I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great Benefits during employment. FRS pension or Investment available. Great people for the most part. Paid sick vacation and personal leave.

    Cons

Clickish, especially with promotions and department transfers. Brass heavy. Some members with rank have no clue what they are doing. They will never admit their ignorance or inabilities.

    Advice to Management

Promote those who will provide the level of service that the people deserve not just because who dated who or who gave who a break on cost...

I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent benefits. Good sergeants. Good extra-duty detail opportunities. Excellent car use policy. The men and women you work with are terrific. Good camaraderie. Very good training department and opportunities.

    Cons

Horrible support from upper management. Sheriff doesn't care about ranks and file members at ALL. You will not advance to anything higher than Sergeant unless you are in the inner circle of buddies. Very, very clicquish. It is more likely you will advance if you are on SWAT or went to Estero High School. Sergeants and district commanders will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat. Girlfriends and family of the in... crowd advance to detective faster than anyone else. If you have a college degree, you are often made to understand that "you aren't that clever and that you made mistakes and can be replaced by any idiot." Direct quote from a district lieutenant. The sheriff is against unions and actively union busts, threatens union organizers, and promotes and offers bonuses to those who do not support a union. If you donate to the sheriff's election find you move up FAST. There is even a name for it: the Thousand Dollar Club. Give more and you can leapfrog other deputies. The deputies have not had a raise in seven years. Civilian staff have. Among the lowest paid agencies in the nation for its size and area population. One-third of deputies are on food stamps if they have kids. The benefits do NOT make up for the poor pay.

    Advice to Management

Pay the deputies what they are worth! You could maybe stop everyone leaving for the east coast and Collier County to make a living wage! Stop the nepotism. Promote smart people who know their jobs instead of the butt-kissers and knuckle-draggers.

I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good equipment, free healthcare, and as of now a decent retirement.

    Cons

Uncompetitive wages, out of control political promotions, poor overall morale.

    Advice to Management

If you don't do something to boost morale from the bottom up, you're going to have to start taking calls yourself.

I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexible work hours, great benefits, paid time off.

    Cons

No career path for analysts, no room for advancement. Talents are not fully utilized there.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about the analysts that support your certified employees! We make their job easier and have analytical skills that they don't possess. Just as they have promotional potential, so should analysts.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The agency pays for your entire health insurance premium. Pretty good schedule for a law enforcement agency.

    Cons

Incredibly low wages. Rampant racial and gender discrimination. Uneducated and untrained management. Uneducated Sheriff whose only law enforcement experience was as a traffic cop. Unfair discipline. Every decision that is made is made in the light of getting the Sheriff re-elected. Good-ole-boy network is taken to a new level. Sworn law enforcement officers are paid so low that they receive food stamps. This... is the worst run agency perhaps in the entire Southeastern United States.

    Advice to Management

Get an education, retire and bring people in from the outside that actually have depth and breadth of experience that is meaningful.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Lee County Sheriff - Florida full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Highly competitive health, dental and optical insurances, all paid for (for employee and their spouse+children) More PTO than I know what to do with Four 10-hour work days, making every weekend a 3-day weekend If you're within the agency, you're family. Probably one of the best Pros is the environment, making day to day work pleasant and fulfilling.

    Cons

Over paid help desk, underpaid software engineers and network administrators, because apparently we're all the same thing. Still, for 99% of people, this agency is an exceptional place to retire from.

    Advice to Management

Scale pay closer to national average for the job's title/duties.
