I worked at Leeds Beckett University full-time

    Pros

Nice City Centre location, good pay. Some wonderful colleagues.

    Cons

The reviews here are accurate, Bullying, micromanagement and managerial incompetence abound. It is not a pleasant place to work. Clearly, the focus is more on income generating opportunities. There is not enough academic space. Classrooms are overcrowded and faculty share open plan office, and there are not nearly enough spaces to meet with students. This is not conducive to the pastoral needs of our students. Faculty are not treated like professionals, and in some cases are not treated respectfully by management. The Human Resources staff are the worst I've encountered in a University environment.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff with respect. Insist that students do the same.

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is a real spirit of community and the majority of staff are very friendly.

    Cons

Currently coming out of a full University restructure which is creating a lot of unease due to the levels of change involved.

Communication within the University is very poor though the new Vice Chancellor is trying to change this.

The general style of management across the University has become very short-term with the focus on intimidate targets, at the cost of developing new activity or investing in new ideas.

I have never worked in an environment where internal politics and playground style politics is so evident. This is a shame as this could be an excellent University to work at. If you enjoy office politics then this is an ideal place to work!

    Advice to Management

Stop the infighting and focus more on communicating your vision for the future, what you are trying achieve and most importantly why.

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Supportive and has really good benefits with regards to health and recognition for work. The company also does a lot of promoting for safety and LGBT

    Cons

Can take a while for referrals to be processed.

    Advice to Management

    Keep being brilliant

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University full-time

    Pros

    Central location
    Good annual leave allowance

    Cons

It's jobs for the boys at Leeds Beckett University! Restructures focusing on getting rid of lower-level admin and customer service roles whilst managers reach even higher grades. Bone idle managers who get away with doing nothing. It's a very unhappy place led by bullies.

Wake up Professor Slee! It's an epidemic!

    Advice to Management

Please admit to the truth! Reprimand the bullies! Appreciate those at ground level!

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Firstly, the organisation manages the employee's work life balance brilliantly. In my team, the work process is very transparent and I am always given clear advice about my responsibilities.

Secondly, it has been great to work with managers who also takes responsibilities of the outcomes of my tasks. This gives a lot of confidence to all I believe.

Finally, a lot of opportunities for training and development. For someone, who wants to grow in their own role or to look for branching out to different skills within the organisation, this is a great place to work for.

    Cons

Sometimes the work process can be slower as decision making takes time but this is also due to the fact that every project involves multiple departments to ensure maximum output.

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

exceptionally generous pay and holiday. Starting to streamline processes to make things easier. Working culture not particularly pressured

    Cons

some colleagues have been there a very long time - promoted beyond capabilities and not up to the job. Quite cliquey, backstabbing and no social life at Headingley campus

    Advice to Management

Need school level admission - too many students accepted that really struggle and staff expected to teach basic reading and writing

    Pros

Good Library Resources run by people who want you to use them.

Many good peers who want you to help you to do your job.

Occupational Health team good - but often ignored

    Cons

Civic Campus - Awful physical working conditions, open plan offices with poor ventilation, hot in summer and cold in winter, noisy, little space for books, or research equipment.

Little opportunity to keep up skills and publication record if you stay more than three years.

Few private spaces to meet students for tutorials or supervision.

Staff have to fight to get appropriate health and safety provision, such as blinds to avoid glare at windows. Attempts made to remove health and safety advisers.

Part timers often have to wait months to be paid.

HR staff do not respond to letters in a timely manner, nor does payroll.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that work loads are honestly fairly shared.

Make sure part time staff are paid with a short time lag

Get out of your offices and ask the grade 8s and below what the job is really like, in private, without their 'managers'.

Stop recruiting students with 'unconditional offers' before they have results.

I have been working at Leeds Beckett University full-time

    Pros

Salary and benefits, good estate, flexible working

    Cons

Victorian workhouse practices for a lot of staff, incompetent bullying management, no progression
Bullying culture still a huge problem that has never been dealt with

    Advice to Management

Well done in bullying your way into your position but don't forget Karma will deal with you when you least expect it
