I worked at Leeds Building Society full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good team building ideas
    some very strong employees
    Interesting content

    Cons

    Cliquey culture
Poor quality, old fashioned and unreliable data sources for decision making
Poor management at mid-level in some areas

    Advice to Management

Follow the private sector to determine better understanding of corporate operations.

Allow staff to make decisions and complete work without numerous cycles of re-working.

Address issues with management who are not altruistic and treat staff badly.

Listen to leavers on their reasons and address those issues

I worked at Leeds Building Society part-time

    Pros

They have benefits but I didn't use them as I didn't find them relevant
Some of my co-workers were lovely and friendly

    Cons

Weird culture - everyone pretends to be fake and happy. Because of this, at the start, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to develop my skills and potentially start a career. But it turned out I was very, very wrong. Management only care about getting as much money and not employees or really even their customers - you just have to try and squeeze as much money out of them as possible plus the manager was a bully. I felt belittled and inadequate so very often and I was not the only one. Even if you complain or raise a grievance, HR and management will not take your side.

    Advice to Management

There is a good reason why certain branches have a high staff turnover. Try and be more objective when judging your managerial staff.

    Advice to Management

Increase staff levels across branch network

    Pros

It is a mutual Building Society which is good for customers.

    Cons

Work related stress and anxiety which has led to depression was treated with hostility, bullying and discrimination. Management state that 'Staff cannot expect the company to look after its employees because this is not the police force for example'. Employment contract states that unpaid overtime MAY be expected but in reality, unpaid overtime is demanded every day, without fail. There is no consistency between branches, blame culture exists and no accountability for bad management decisions. Health and safety policy is not adhered to - a ladder fell on me whilst I was crawling around on the floor, doing a cash count. Other policies are available but not implemented. Very shabby organisation

    Advice to Management

No point in giving management feedback because they do not care enough to take it on board.Sales is their only priority and they do not care how this is achieved.

    Pros

Good people and intimate office- no worry of getting 'lost' amongst everyone

    Cons

Little room for progression, the managers are too absorbed in maintaining productivity and take little to no notice of the wellbeing of its employees. Lack of inter-departmental communication means tasks go unnoticed and unsolved.

    Advice to Management

Take notice of your current employees before recruiting prospective candidates. Numbers and good statistics aren't everything!

I have been working at Leeds Building Society full-time

    Pros

Great team ethics, with few contractors to deal with. Leading to a quick turnaround of ideas.

High CSR head space and events.

    Cons

Uninspiring offices for someone who likes to look out the widow occasionally. Small village feel with legacy systems and relationships.

    Advice to Management

Become agile across the whole business, and implement a model led by production not sales. Once you produce a great product then you can sell no matter what the competition does.

Build niche markets and highly incentivise innovation in all sections of the business, but control risk via control of gating.

I worked at Leeds Building Society (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Travelling down to meetings in Leeds & Newcastle was a nice break from the constant sales, sales, sales pressure.

    Cons

Manager was extremely two faced and often belittled colleagues. I raised this with HR and nothing was done as he often charmed (sucked up) them when visiting Leeds. At my exit interview I raised the fact that the manager was informing other members of staff of their colleagues private business which had been discussed in confidence with the manager - or so we were led to believe! I was advised this would be investigated but when speaking to former colleagues I was advised that nothing had been done.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to your staff's coments at exit interviews - there is a reason this particular branch in Scotland has a very, very high turn over of staff.

I have been working at Leeds Building Society full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The best thing about working for the company is the people! I've been here for just over 6 months and have really enjoyed meeting all the people here.

There is a good attitude among eveyryone in the business about work-life balance. It feels like the company cares about its people.

    Cons

There is no flexi-time policy which would be a welcome addition to the other benefits.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to colleagues and making the Society a better place to work.
