    Pros

Comfortable Work Environment; accessible to mass transit (Edison Train Station across the street); great, supportive management/supervisors, learned a tremendous amount about the legal system in a short amount of time; having the same paid holidays as in NJ's court system; working with many outstanding pre-law college students; being able to 'truly make a difference' in the lives of low-income residents. Work/Life Balance Good (Flexible hours and days). Great way to gain experience working in Non-profit organizations.

    Cons

High stress environment, not caused by management or coworkers but the clients (for many you are their 'last resort' for legal advice and many call in in an agitated state), having to learn to adapt to each supervisor's personality and tendencies (some very supportive and patient; some more critical and demanding); being 'overwhelmed' by volume of calls; clients being upset when their appointment is not scheduled for 'right away' even though their legal issue is not pending/no upcoming court date; emotional duress caused by hearing the terrible circumstances of some clients. BIG ISSUE: Extremely difficult to become full-time, no heath benefits without becoming full-time. Occasional tardiness and immaturity demonstrated by some college-aged employees, but offset by their energy, enthusiasm and idealism.

    Advice to Management

The advice is aimed primarily towards the State: LSNJ's funding was drastically cut several years ago when the current governor came into office, devastating the Intake Paralegal department and reducing it to Online Intake and Volunteers... Restore funding so that as many people as possible can be helped by LSNJ and related projects.

The money is decent considering how crummy the economy is.

    Cons

EVERYTHING falls under your job description.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of some of the dead weight in the joint!

I have been working at Legal Services of New Jersey full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Working for a good cause
    Good supervisors and coworkers
    Fairly good pay
Excellent benefits package - I mean excellent!
Unbelievably Family Oriented - I have NEVER experienced this level of understanding in any job!
I've learned so much working here and I continue to learn. I love that.

    Cons

Can be very overwhelming at times due to changes incorporated by those who don't actually perform the tasks they are "improving".
    Pay can be better
No real advancement opportunities for those who seek it., but it's not a big place so it's to be expected.

    Advice to Management

Work on moral boosters. Due to the state budget pay isn't that great, but you can make your staff feel appreciated by doing other things to show them you appreciate their commitment.

    Cons

Not great management. Felt like those at the top were more concerned with their salaries than the goals of the organization.

I have been working at Legal Services of New Jersey full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The satisfaction of working for an organization that makes a difference in the lives of those most vulnerable in society. Being part of a team of dedicated professionals. Corporate culture really values staff's personal lives and makes arrangements to accommodated personal responsibilities where possible. Truly is a cross gender and culture work environment.

    Cons

Commuting in the central New Jersey area is difficult. Traffic is always heave during normal rush hour and if there is an accident or any kind of disruption in traffic patterns, traffic comes to a halt. There can be a significant amount of micromanagement depending on the project you work in.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs should look for ways to empower staff to be more self sufficient, making decisions without the continual involvement of others where possible. Some of the procedures should be streamlined to alleviate strains on productivity, such as time recording burdens.

    Pros

It's a great place to go if you're a student and you're looking for some extra cash and experience.
The attorneys there are all nice, low stress environment, and you get to speak with lots of inspiring people

    Cons

The actual intake process is pretty long. You have to memorize lots of different protocols and deal with high call volumes. Some of the discussions you end up having with your clients can also be emotionally taxing.

    Advice to Management

More effort to develop office culture and unity would go a long way to improve morale.
