I worked at Leica Geosystems for more than a year

    Pros

The company has still a good name, and could be a nice springboard to a better job. Great colleagues. Good work life balance, with completely flexible working time.

    Cons

Agile development - Applied in the worst possible way to transform developers into mindless bit shifting clones. No career possible, unless you're swiss or austrian. Nightmarish software structure - Lots of talk on quality, patterns, architecture, agility, but at the end the software structure looks like what a kid on a sugar high would draw. Don't expect gratitude or even acknowledgement - A couple of good ideas I proposed to the management got implemented by full time teams (we're talking about around 10 people working full time) and I didn't even get a thank you. High burn out risk - The best people either leave in time, or burn out and are fired.

    Advice to Management

Clean up the middle management. It looks every day less like an engineering team, and more like a bunch of good ole boys.

I have been working at Leica Geosystems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

+ stable company + good work conditions + good image

    Cons

    - relation oriented when it comes to management. In the core deviation (Geomatics) 90% of the management are Austrian (literally they live on the other side of the boarder). They support each other and cover their back. - politics - very bureaucratic - no career development (even for Swiss people is very difficult to grow, for other foreigners no discussion) - very very conservative (replicates the same functionality of the past products in the new products). - no room for ideas (everything is decided by a group of manger in closed rooms) - on the devices they have very old software technologies - the code base is very very old and in a bad shape (in some areas the software is more than 20 years old) - avoid the embedded software group is the worst (it develops the software for GPS receivers, TPS and field controllers) - fake involvement just to show off to the HR - most of the manager have no people management skills

    Advice to Management

    * reorganize the management (even fire some managers) * encourage innovation and risk taking * stop the talent exodus * provide career development to existing staff * in the software department adopt current technologies (leave the middle age of software)
