      Its a Construction Job

Jul 1, 2020 - Construction Manager in Bear, DE

      Pros

Good pay and benefits, spend time outside, interaction with the whole construction process from start to finish (get to learn tricks to the trades).

      Cons

Upper management can be very difficult to deal with i.e. getting trades paid or lack of understanding what is expected. Above the normal hours in overtime (even for construction) depending on upper management style.

      Pros

Decent pay, ok benefits and fair time off.

      Cons

The Portland division laid off 18 associates in June 10th and on July 17th they have posted those same positions to be filled Now of course they had everyone sign severance/separation agreements so they cannot be held liable for any kind of age, preference, wage, etc discrimination. HR is non existent, lower level staff is unappreciated by corporate or the division, while upper management has retreats and bonuses. According to management you can never actually be doing a good enough job to get good reviews. Associates are stretched with daily work and there is minimal training or support from upper management.

      Gone the wrong direction

      Pros

Co-workers in sales support each other.

      Cons

Management gossips, makes sales feel like people who waste space and are overpaid, takes money from checks if errors are made such as missing a check mark, management is uneducated in leadership and sales, doesn’t recognize achievements but amplified negativity and sends bulk emails outlining others short falling. Negative leadership. Many leaving. Push construction too fast equaling poor quality and unhappy homeowners. Push staff too hard, too fast over human workload abilities. Staff is dressed and unhappy in all departments but office staff and upper management. It’s slice your neighbors throat to protect your own IMO hat departments.

      IT Department - STAY AWAY!

      Pros

They will provide you with the equipment you need to do your job - a laptop and sometimes a cell phone.

      Cons

Upper management is incompetent, divisive, purposefully keeps employees in a state of paranoia, and constantly promises executives things that they know cannot be delivered. They expect employees to never make a mistake, to seek approval for everything down to getting permission to send an email to certain people, and have no tolerance for educated opinions if those opinions differ from their own. There is so much red tape, it takes months and months to complete very simple projects. The teams fight against each other and blame everything on other teams - no accountability, and upper management refuses to acknowledge the abusive nature of the environment. Contractors outnumber actual associates and are fired on whims for reasons that typically don't add up. This is not an environment for any self-respecting IT professional.

Run far away and as fast as you can unless you're a narcissist or egoist

      Pros

Office was close to home. You'll get a laugh watching the sales manager come in hung over after a night of partying.

      Cons

Cattiness in office staff, particular individuals would gang up if you were smarter than them and try to mis-train you out of fear for losing their jobs. No sense of structure nor empowering knowledge by upper management. When told of issues they were more concerned with threats of going to corporate and only when threatened was anything done about the employee bullying abuse. Too concerned with numbers and $$$ all the while building a poor product...their own employees won't buy houses from them and joke about it!! New DP was hired because Jacksonville was worst performing division in US. Expect a lot of overtime - you'll be seeing a whole lot less of your friends and family.

      Pros

I was proud to sell the homes, they are well built and the construction superintendants took great pride in their work. I never had a buyer who was dissapointed in the quality of their new home.

      Cons

Upper management made important decisions about our lives (such as transferring us from community to community) without involving us, or even giving us a few options to choose from. Compensation was changed and we were told to sign the new contract without having any time to look it over.

Best to avoid if IT professional

Mar 21, 2018 - Previous IT Employee in Miami, FL

      Pros

      1. The desire to incorporate new technology and be innovative.

      Cons

      1. They segregate Contractors to the point of rudeness. 2. Don't hire from within. 3. Upper management COMPLETELY lost. Never have time for anyone. 4. Internal recruiting is clueless. Provides horrible candidates for open positions. 5. Job security is shaky at best, with very high turnover. 6. Very siloed with a lot of finger pointing. 7. Parking is awful. Dings, dents (and worse) are almost a guarantee and that's IF you find a spot. Claim "No liability". 8. Physical security is laughable. Don't feel safe.

      Construction Manager

Nov 9, 2014 - Construction Manager in Orlando, FL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

great benefits, pay is ok. Not what most big builders pay for good CM's but it is competitive with most BIG builders.

      Cons

Upper management is purely production driven, not a lot of attention given to the individual for achievements made to better the process or for meeting deadlines consistently.
