I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The organization has a great mission to work for; Volunteers and Board are top-notch; They regularly promote from within, which means lots of opportunities

    Cons

Leadership doesn't reflect rest of staff (most staff are women, leadership was almost exclusively men) and leadership roles are turned over frequently

    Pros

LLS is on the cutting edge of finding a cure for blood cancer.

    Cons

The national office does not research specific areas to determine if LLS is in line with other charities in the area with respect to sponsorship levels.

I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Excellent sales training opportunities in scenic locations each summer Templates, data and resources provided for recruitment and customer service Frequent goal progress discussions with direct reports at both state and national levels Heavy on customer service to high-impact (wealthy) donors and participants Major impact on cancer treatment FDA approvals in 2017-2018

      Cons

In the words of an Executive Director: “you can’t get caught in the patients’ drama. We’re focused on the bigger picture, research.” Patient aid resources are difficult to access at best; at worst a quota has been imposed by diagnosis, without Information Resource Officers providing alternate financial aid options. Sales culture; focus on impact, wealth, numbers vs compassion for patients & families. Very little exposure...

Support remote staff with appropriate materials and resources to have a functioning office. Provide a stipend for meetings so there is no confusion on what is appropriate or approved for meeting spending up front Provide access to budget information to each campaign Director and manager Please consider the importance of administrative staff for remote workers Information Resource Officers could be trained to provide...

I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

Incredible mission connections, your work moves the needle on research and patient programs. Curing blood cancers is what they do. It is HIGHLY meaningful and the volunteers and staff are very motivated and passionate.

        Cons

Very poor compensation or work life balance focus. Highly demanding jobs with lots of nights and weekends. No upwards growth for the majority of staff. Lots of favoritism in chapters and with national/senior management.

        Advice to Management

Practice fair hiring and promotion practices. Give opportunity for professional development. Renegotiate pay scales across the board. Rigid and out of date practices dampen and halt success at the chapter level. Most managers of staff are promoted to managers not because they have leadership qualities but because they have outlasted everyone else. Hire actual managers to manage people and fundraisers to fundraise.

          Pros

The day you quite or get fired...which happens to staff weekly.

          Cons

          EVERYTHING...trust me. I could name names...many.

          Advice to Management

Replace everyone from top down. This includes all those in the White Plains office.
