I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The best part about LLS is that the work is totally mission driven. You feel good about the work that you do every day and you are inspired by all of the advances in treatments that are resulting directly from the research being completed by LLS.

    Cons

There are a few evening and weekend events. All of them are mission driven and volunteer focused, so this isn't really a negative If you are looking for a straight 9-5 job this might be troublesome for you.

    Advice to Management

Continue to inspire employees by always sharing the advances and progress of the mission.

I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Have saved countless lives as a result of their work and advancements in blood cancer research. Passionate volunteers and board members. Staff truly do care about their work. Really enjoyed being there.

    Cons

Data management and record keeping is sorely lacking. Information is kept in numerous Excel spreadsheets, in numerous locations, and is hard to find or paint the bigger picture of corporate partnerships. Much of the information are met in people’s heads. Local leadership is steering the ship without a compass. Everything is typically done last minute and in rush, despite the event occurring on an annual basis.

    Advice to Management

Implement better data and record keeping procedures for donor/sponsor management.

    Pros

    Great mission and humble CEO.

    Cons

The Nebraska chapter Executive Director makes our office life a nightmare. She makes a terrible first impression as it looks like she rolls out of bed to come to work. She constantly starts drama in the office by gossiping about her subordinates and is constantly complaining about her health, board members and personal life. Everyone has to walk on eggshells and it’s a very toxic work environment. All my colleagues love...

    Advice to Management

Just because someone has worked for LLS for a long time does not mean they should move up in management. Also look at the turnover rate and see there is a huge problem.

    Pros

The mission is wonderful, and you can really see it at work throughout the DFW metroplex.

    Cons

The company culture in the Dallas office is abysmal and lacking any direction. You are chastised for trying to learn, then slapped on the wrist for attempting to do your work - there is no winning situation. Work/life balance is nonexistent and the work is thankless. National is way too involved and micromanagey, setting unrealistic goals and offering "help" in all the wrong ways. In no way are you set up for success....

I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The survivors you meet and hear their stories of overcoming the diseases touches your heart daily. Research is key and LLS spends accordingly.

    Cons

Employees fend for themselves and does not lend to team efforts. Existing staff does not trust new personnel and has a clique feeling among coworkers. Sink or swim mentality on education of employees. Short career life spans with those with tenure about 3 years.

    Advice to Management

Commit to your employees the resources and training with the goal of building success. Turn and burn is a reputation that plagues 501c3s and systemically proving that LLS may be guilty of this.

I worked at Leukemia & Lymphoma Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

LLS is an amazingly patient-focused organization who really dives head first into research, programs and services that will benefit cancer patients. It's so humbling working with the patients and providing them opportunities to come back and support the mission. The position itself is very rewarding. The individuals that work in this office will have your back from day 1 and help to ensure everything is a success.

    Cons

The communication is very poor. Some departments don't work on site which causes the majority of the issues in work not getting done. This has been brought up numerous times. The organization provides plenty of opportunities to provide your opinion, but nothing ever changes or is fixed. The pay isn't adjusted for cost of living which makes it difficult for someone in a large city. This office needs a HR presence due to...

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and treat them well. Take the time to listen to them and act on what they say. Reward them for a job well done. Do not act on your emotions and treat people kindly. In order to function efficiently and effectively, treat your employees the same and house them under one roof. The inefficiency in communication is hurting you more than you will ever know.

    Pros

Great mission. Work with co-workers and volunteers that are passionate about the mission.

    Cons

Leadership at the local level is disorganized. Frequently work nights and weekends. No human resources at local chapter so it is difficult if there is a problem with another employee or your boss.

    Pros

Mission, CEO, national office always there to support. They’ve really improved employee trainings and support over the past two years. I feel passionate, knowledgeable, and supported in my role. I also have advanced pretty quickly! Love LLS.

    Cons

Direct management. Smaller offices around the country seem to be ignored.

    Cons

Challenging fundraising environment in some of the outlying non-urban areas, and little support.

    Advice to Management
