I worked at Level 3 Communications full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Plenty of great people who became great friends. Early on, the company had an amazing vision, but later struggled for survival in the telecom bust. One of a kind national network. Some amazing Sales professionals.

    Cons

Some of the best leaders, and some of the worst managers in any industry. Egos...egos everywhere. Inability to retain top talent.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the people who do the work...just like you did in the earliest days of the company. Lose the ego and regain your curiosity.

I worked at Level 3 Communications full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There are some really great people working here. I've made lifelong friends at Level 3, and they continue to be able to recruit really great people. If you are in a good team, with a good manager, it can be a really great place to work.

    Cons

There is a lot of dysfunction, from all of the acquisitions that have been partially integrated over the previous 5-10 years. That means it's just really hard to get things done, and that has led to some serious apathy in quite a few places. If you are in a dysfunctional team, with a politician manager, you are in for a rough ride.

    Advice to Management

Don't downsize through attrition, because that just leaves you with the dead wood. Think about how you can cut through the political game-playing by middle management.

I have been working at Level 3 Communications full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, great people, industry-leader, innovative, solid network

    Cons

Not an organization for you if you aren't comfortable with change. Also limited career opportunities unless you are located at headquarters or a larger office

    Advice to Management

There are some great managers and there are some who could use some coaching. Develop your people and be flexible to retain talent

    Pros

Great people. Important work. Great work-life balance.

    Cons

Not the newest tech, so you may be working on software that nobody knows how it works. Not a lot of commitment behind testing and good software practices.

I have been working at Level 3 Communications full-time

    Pros

Great people to work alongside and have my best manager in over 20 years in telecom currently

    Cons

More than 35 active systems, new changes daily that cause confusion and indecisive executive leadership that manages through metrics. No room for advancement if you are not a friend of someone.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and get a strong leadership base rather than the current micro-manager format that has proven unsuccessful for many years
