I have been working at Liberty International Underwriters full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The management does not breath down your neck while you work. We are treated like adults. Friendly work environment.

    Cons

The company does not like to promote from within. UAs are very seldom trained to be UWs.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your own people!

I have been working at Liberty International Underwriters full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are given autonomy and room to breathe. All Underwriters are specialists and encouraged to think outside the box / take charge of your own success. Management / department heads in general are competent and think like entrepreneurs. Office environment is positive and everyone treats each other with trust and mutual respect. Unlike it's parent Liberty Mutual, this is a pretty flat organization so I see that feedback is taken into account and we see reasonable progress about every 6 months or so. We also have the backing of Liberty Mutual, which helps with resource and marketing.

Work/life balance is valued. Benefits are competitive / salary may or not be depending on role.

    Cons

There are no formal training programs and nothing will be handed to you. If you seek out information and perform your job function well, you will be supported.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to communicate more with its employees and streamline messaging across all departments. Different lines of business are more informed than others.

Business Development Officers (BDOs) are a big step forward for this division.

    Pros

LIU has some good benefits they offer a pension plan not many companies do! Some departments are growing and growing fast!

    Cons

LIU has poor communication from upper management to their employees.
All departments are separate they don't work as a team if one person has the ability to help another team out it takes weeks to get it approved. I could never understand that!

    Advice to Management

Learn to provide your employees with communication that's honest and true information!

Senior management at a Liberty International perspective requires evaluation.

    Advice to Management

Liberty Mutual needs to evaluate the senior management team of Liberty International.

    Pros

lots of restaurants to eat lunch. So many different types of food. The building has a nice turf area and a garden to enjoy.

    Cons

Everything. Management is abusive. Very clique-ish. They place is such a slave ship NO ONE is happy. If you need a check, stay one year but ALWAYS be looking for another job.

    Advice to Management

Fire the abusers, you kno who they are.

I have been working at Liberty International Underwriters full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits:
Medical PPO (not a large deductible)
    401k currently has a 70% match up to 6%
    Pension
Generous PTO (though expect to manage your workflow while on vacation or while sick)
    Covered paid parking
    Friendly and helpful co-workers
Good combined ratio- profitable company so decent bonuses

    Cons

Limited authority- even with 20+ years of experience.
Slow response on anything outside local authority.
Limited training, if any- may vary by branch.
No support for CE's or Designations- too much time out of the office and/or too much expense.
A "we've always done it this way" mentality- not open to new ideas or suggestions.
Micro-management -though likely varies by office.
    No flexible work arrangements
Work-life balance minus life balance. You will work some of your PTO.

    Advice to Management

If you want to attract and retain top talent, you have to offer something better and/or different than your competitors and not just stand behind Liberty Mutual's brand. Open lines of communication between employees and senior management rather than filtering all communication through the local management. Practice what you preach on the website.
