  1. "Hold out for a Company that will value you as an employee and a person. Liberty Mutual is not it!"

I worked at Liberty Mutual Agency full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

None - Would not recommend this employer to my worst enemy. Pay and benefits may be a draw but don't fall for it. You'll need to put in so many hours to meet the check the box expectations that you'll end up owing the company money by the time it's all said and done. You may accrue a good amount of leave but will never feel like you can take time off due to demands of the job. Absolutely not worth it. There is absolutely no value put on work life balance although they will (dishonestly) tell you otherwise.

    Cons

Once full integration into Liberty Mutual way of doing things, employees became just a number and were treated as such. Extremely poor middle and senior management. Extreme micro management, failure to listen and absolutely no support for management at the branch. Superior attitude of management outside the State of branch location. Executive level management not held accountable for offensive comments or personal insults to employees. Sr manager with no backbone, no support for those at branch involved in day to day operations. No effort to understand branch level concerns, disinterest, lazy, just collecting a paycheck. Employees not valued and treated as disposable. The sad part . . . This experience was not unique to the location.

    Advice to Management

Waste of time. I've spoken to 30+ people who've worked in Liberty offices all across the US and all have had the same experience and unfortunately with some of same managers, executives and corporate staff. None can stomach the Liberty commercials because they are of such blatant contrast to what the company actually stands for. I very much regret the 10 years spent working in one of Liberty's unhealthy work environments and am hopeful that this review will save anyone from considering employment with this company from needlessly investing time and energy into a company that views its employees as disposable. Thankfully, there are much better employers out there. Employers who actually have moral values that they operate by and insist that those values are shared by their employees, especially those in leadership roles.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Agency (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pro is the benefits

    Cons

Where should I start? Micromanagement, violating Illinois law by having closing quotas, treating employees like garbage, second guessing every decision you make

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees about their complaints

Great Training! The benefits are excellent.

    Cons

The staff is very negative and very hard to work with. It's too hard for certain people to move up. Too much nepotism and favoritism.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Agency full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Co-Workers are great, used to be good morale.

    Cons

Poor upper management. Was a caring environment until the change in workflow due to reorganization. No one listens to those of us on the front line. Threats, poor treatment, and favoritism. The workload is too high. They do not care about their workers at all!

    Advice to Management

Listen, listen, listen. The workload is too high. Humble yourselves in upper mgmt to listen.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Agency full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company provides alot of constant work.

    Cons

The company is very petty and plays favorites. The rules by which you are evaluated continually change, and only the 'in' crowd is told timely. Once you are hurt on the job, they do everything possible to not report the WC claim and then to try to impede any treatment. Finally, about the time you are able to return to work, they 'eliminate' your position. They insist you only work 37.5hr./wk but the workload makes it impossible.

    Advice to Management

Have people in charge who have actually worked in the job or discipline they are managing. An Actuary has no concept of Claims and the pressure of working in claims.

    Pros

Excellent training, worked with great people.

    Cons

Overworked and Understaffed because they keep having layoffs. The CEO Ted Kelly keeps pocketing 20M a year. What a joke, maybe he could pass some of that along to his employees instead of huge layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Training is pretty good and tons of good people work for the company. Please appreciate them a bit more.

    Pros

the people i work with make the day enjoyable

    Cons

    heavy workload for customer service reps; all perks are geared to other departments; poor management in local office & corporate; a lot of favoritism- unless the manager likes you- dont expect him to do anything for you; no work/life balance if you are in customer service; service reps in local offices are being eliminated in 2016;

    Pros

    total rewards and work/life balance

    Cons

Recruiting is weak and viewed as an administrative task- very transactional and leadership shuffles around internal talent versus finding fresh talent in the market. HR and recruiting are not aligned. I would not recommend this function to a friend or family member.

    Advice to Management

Alignment in recruiting processes and practices across HR. The acquisition is not aligned with Boston Corporate.
