I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Many career paths, investments in technology and new processes show a corporate interest in staying relevant in the future, lots of underwriting talent throughout the organization. Some progressive ideas with work-life mgmt.

    Cons

Too many reorgs. Agents and employees can't keep up with the changes. Sometimes the changes are good but then everything changes in two years and the prior achievements are lost. The latest commercial insurance reorg, which took 8-9 months to roll-out, was a complete scrambling of the framework laid by the prior major reorg. Speaking for underwriting, in the field we couldn't figure out what in the world mgmt was thinking with the latest changes. not clear what successful competitor we were emulating or what future business model we were preparing for. All that was clear was the stress and uncertainty the field had to endure yet again. I believe the company will remain a strong platform in the long run given the investments in technology and the talent they have but the employees are being put through a painful, and needless IMO, roller coaster ride.

    Advice to Management

A year ago I would have said tweaks are needed but don't blow things up. At this point, I think the new Commercial Insurance doesn't quite make sense but yet another reorg would break everyone's spirits. Listen to the field and listen to your agents and brokers.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - paid time off starts accruing the month you start working
    - 11 paid federal holidays and 4 personal days per year
    - 401k employer match starts immediately when you start working (some companies don't match until a certain time after your start date)
    - annual wellness incentives, although they decrease in amount every year
    - entire company is switching Agile after decades of using Waterfall
    - IT departments are stepping up their game to make it more exciting and appealing to work/stay there

    Cons

    - extremely traditional and old company set in their ways
    - many employees who have been there for decades, 25th anniversaries are common
    - some employees are extremely overworked, doing more than one person's job
    - career opportunities can be limited to certain tracks depending on manager/department
    - IT has tried too hard for too long to be exactly like tech companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft, but continues to keep trying to no avail
    - organizational restructuring occurs almost every year (some minor, some major), keeping employees on their toes on if they will have a job next month

    Advice to Management

Stop wasting your time and money trying to be a tech company. Just be an insurance company that serves customers and takes care of employees. Morale is low and will stay low for a very long time if you don't make meaningful, positive changes instead of simply cutting costs where you think is easiest.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large organization, finally seeing opportunities in the field offices that traditionally have only been available in Boston. Great coworkers. Pay is decent, vacation generous if you can take it. Training organization. Encourage getting certifications. Annual increases are given but are low. VIP Bonus vary depending on company, department and individual results. For the first time ever ..., jeans all summer.

    Cons

Lots of change. Need to listen to field on what is working and what is not. Consultants are not the end all, be all.
Management needs more coaching on how to manage, it's not just about completing reports. Employee should not have to chase Manager for a one on one meeting. Don't get old at Liberty and overstay your welcome. 2017 has had 4 layoffs so far. Performance scoring/ calibration is questionable. It seems that the more vocal managers get their people scored higher. The performance score and annual is determined in Fall. Your actual appraisal is not done until Jan and annual given March. Work life balance is a struggle.
Communication clearly on issues, layoffs etc.

    Advice to Management

Ask significant questions in the employee surveys and really tackle issues.
    Improve work loads
    Coach managers to be better
    Enough consultants
Bring back sick days so those with the flu stay home vs infecting the office
Be kind to those seasoned employees.
Strive to really be a top 100 to work at

    Pros

Good work life balance and learning how to make complex software for an enterprise environment

    Cons

Low pay for developers, have to fight to do anything innovative because they seem to not want to rock the boat to much, not to willing to try something new.

    Advice to Management

Pay your developers better and get them machines they can develop on, not the awful windows laptops and vms
