I worked at Life Storage full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Life Storage prior to 2016 was a great company to work for. The work was fun, the pay was reasonable and the bonuses were within reach. However, in May 2016 Life Storage sold out to Sovran Self Storage for 1.3 billion. Property, employees, and customers. And with the change came horror. Sovran, under the assumed identity of Uncle Bobs chose to keep the old Life Storage name simple because they had destroyed their own name. Upper management, as in Corporate have never stepped foot on a property, yet remind you how to run your property, changing policies and procedures daily. DMs are hired with zero prior knowledge of storage or even business. Managers are decided bases on who kisses who behind, rather than who actually knows their job. This whole company is a joke.

    Cons

The cons are a mile long. I worked for Life Storage, prior to take over and after and I gotta say HORRIBLE.

*The new company runs under the assumed name of Life Storage as they ran their previous name Uncle Bobs into the ground (that should tell you something)

*They hire inept DMs who have zero knowledge of the storage industry, zero knowledge of how to manage and zero knowledge of accountability

    * Benefits are a joke. Over $100 per pay check just for yourself, not including your family

     *Bonuses cease to exist

*The DMs they do hire, do illegal acts to make their properties look better (seen it, called one out and was ultimately told I could quit or they would continue to cut my hours forcing me to quit)

*They retaliate against you when you do call them out and become offensive when they realize you actually have more experience than them.

*To be promoted you either have to brown nose or be kissing up to someone (seen it, called it out)

*Their "Proprietary System" is SO old and outdated that even customers complain on the outdated ways they operate, yet when a customer concern does arise, the facility employees are the ones at fault.

*Every single member from the very top to the very bottom micromanages every move you make, however, 99.9% of Corporate has never stepped foot on a property

*Getting anything corrected, ie maintenance, customer concerns, IT issues is an act of congress

    * Managers pad their records (illegally) to make their facilities look better and to raise their "goal". Seen this happen at several facilities

*The only true people who are straight with you are the Auditors and even their hands are tied by Big Corporate

*Negative reviews on any website are immediately removed, ie customer, employee ( yeap they actually have someone to alter reviews to make themselves look good)

    Advice to Management

There is no advice to help you. All of the positive reviews on Glass Door were paid for. They actually sent out a Memo to "Put up good reviews on Glass Door". This company is only a few steps from either being sued for illegal activity or being bought out by someone bigger. As big as you think you are, a happy day will come when you are swallowed up by Extra Space, Cube Smart or even Public Storage. You have zero accountability to your Regional, DMs or Property Managers to the illegal acts they do, yet you allow it to continue.

"Terrible company. Management micromanages your every move. The job more often then not is very boring."

I have been working at Life Storage part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Perfect if you’re organized and have no aspirations. I guess if you read a lot it’d be fine because there’s plenty of time for that.

    Cons

Management is incompetent and lack leadership skills. Pay is a joke and it’s hard to get full time work.... even as an Associate Manager... a title which means nothing because your basically a janitor.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you’re going to do in interviews. The whole bait and switch thing is the reason why your turnover is so high.

    Pros

Great open door policy with District and Area Managers. They listen and understand.

    Cons

Rate of pay is the reason they cannot get hires to come on board or stay for any period of time here in NY.

    Pros

    Great work life balance, 9-6pm Monday-Saturday, Sunday's 9am-1pm

    Cons

Sometimes you may have to clean out a unit that a customer leaves or doesn't pay for sweeping up the property when it's hot outside shoveling some snow if you're in the Northeast .

    Pros

Pay is ok for Assoc managers, better for store managers.
Company seems to be fair with customers

    Cons

Very high focus on merchandise sales.
Most stores only have 2 employees, and if someone quits or gets fired, it takes a long time to replace them, and employees from other stores are required to cover.
Each store is allowed a specific number of man hours per week and CANNOT exceed these limits.

    Advice to Management

    Train your area managers better

I worked at Life Storage full-time

    Pros

Decent amount of down time, can be a fairly easy and fun job depending on who your managers are. Health benefits and 401K are available to Full-Time employees after 90 days. Depending on the location you work at, days will go by quickly when busy.

    Cons

Upper management can be terrible and very unorganized, getting approval for something to be done as easy as a broken door can take weeks or you might never even hear from the Home Office at all. Benefits for just you are around $100 per pay check. They do not offer family benefits. Minimal pay for what you actually do. If you work at an older location, expect lots of problems that will never be repaired (only "fixed") If something goes wrong, expect to be called in at any point in a 24 hour day even when the store is closed. Usually only 2 employees per store as well, good luck getting any time off longer than a day or two.

    Advice to Management

Treat your store level associates with respect and hear them out every once in awhile. We are basically living at our locations, we know what the issues are that are going on there and deal with the same customers that are complaining face to face on a daily basis. We do know what we are talking about. Every "improvement" made in the last couple years, especially this year when Uncle Bob's bought out Life Storage has done absolutely nothing to improve this company.
