I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

inherited a great culture from its mother company the Applied Biosystems, a warm and friendly environment, great relationship between all. rewarded hard work with bonuses, and benefits

    Cons

gradual degradation of the culture that made it such a great place to work, during the later years.
That company is only a memory now

    Advice to Management

The more friendly the environment the greater the enthusiasm of employees to do better job every day. Every one wins

I worked at Life Technologies as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the people I worked with and the boss I worked for..

    Cons

Some of the employees were afraid of other employees taking over their jobs.

    Advice to Management

The management ask the employees to take a chance and work on side projects but then this has the employee doing work on their own time and also puts the employee at risk of being laid off because they are working on an unknown project..

I worked at Life Technologies as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

working at life tech makes you "feel good" because you're working for a good cause and the people working there are all good since they also chose to work for the benefit of everyone in healthcare.. so i enjoyed working with the people.

    Cons

internship wasn't very structured so I ended up wasting time and not learning a lot.. I also thought that the job description didn't match the internship at all so that was disappointing. I wish it was more structured and more than one intern in one project rather than one intern in a different project. this is because some interns had good supervisors that gave them a solid project whereas others did not.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of challenging work, lots of opportunities for learning, great colleagues across the globe, no micromanagement and fast pace dynamic environment.

    Cons

Work overload, work/family balance is non-existent. Medical benefits quality started trending down, management failed to keep their promises. Certain business units got better perks than other business units showing favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Policies and incentives should be applied equally across the business units. Re-calibrate the workload and balance to match peoples capabilities. Ensure managers are competent and give them appropriate training to be able to manage others.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Most people there value your contributions more than the time you spend at the office. The teams are very coordinated and connected; they communicate every step of the way. They trust you to work with high-level staff within a very short period of time. Very interesting and exciting body of knowledge with which to work.

    Cons

Training was by documentation; the documentation was out of date, which we learned by spending time producing the wrong results.

    Advice to Management

There's a relevant adage: "Most people don't leave their jobs--they leave their managers." Like in most work environments, some of the managers would benefit (and their teams would benefit) if they took management courses.
