I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Online learning modules and lots of training, mentoring program, opportunities to cross-train, management and HR pretty good (I've seen a lot worse). Good local leaders (Austin).

    Cons

Too much focus on short term goals/quarterly numbers. Sub-cultures within Life Tech (i.e. Ion) are very different and cause high level of stress and frustration. Too much bureaucracy and people to go through for approvals of basic tasks. IT support is terrible - 3 plus weeks to get a laptop.

    Advice to Management

Drive decision-making further down in the company, do better job of planning and executing to longer-term strategy. Improve IT support and new hire experience.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Dynamic environment, cutting-edge technologies, strong teams, and clarity of vision help make Life Technologies a great place to develop a career. Life Technologies is doing some very exiting things with cloud computing, application delivery, bioinformatics, and big-data analysis.

    Cons

Fast paced environment, this is not the place to work for people who like to keep a static routine or are unwilling to learn new technologies and modern processes.

    Advice to Management

Keep the vision, focus on delivery.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I've been with Life Technologies for over 7 years. The reason I stay and wish to continue working here are:

    1. Dynamic environment with constant opportunity to learn
    2. A lot of career growth and movement opportunities
    3. Variety and challenging nature of the work
    4. Great colleagues who I enjoy and respect
    5. The companies' mission, values and potential

    Cons

I love it here, but I've seen many struggle with the pace and constant change. It's not for those that want a predictable day-to-day task list. There are a lot of opportunities but navigating the culture and driving your career growth is an expectation. There aren't a lot of promotional hand-outs. You work hard for everything you get here.

    Advice to Management

Our Sr. Leaders have the best intentions and are trying to balance difficult macro-economic factors with individual expectations, but having to make trade-offs on benefits, time off and other employee related items impacts the perception of Life being a great place to work. They need to do this better and try to avoid as much or as deep of changes to benefit programs moving forward. I believe they are still competitive but it feels like we're always hearing about new changes and/or takeaways.
