    Pros

Great, smart & competent people. AB had market dominance & great technologies

    Cons

Over the years & since Hunkapiller left, many executive management including acquisitions have led to the loss of AB's cutting edge. Turned too much into a marketing machine where the quality and customer satisfaction became a smoke screen. This was demonstrated by main competitors such as Illumina to consistently beat LT on its own turf.

    Pros

1)Very resourceful environment; 2) lots of capable technical staffs and knowledgable R&D scientists and marketing people

    Cons

    Pros

    Great co-workers
Good corporate philosophy of giving back to the community
    Good wages and benefits
Quality products you can believe in

    Cons

Company is getting much better at killing off projects/products they don't think will generate enough profit.
If your project is cancelled, you are let go. Very little effort seems to be made to try and find employees alternate positions.
If you are let go, as soon as they tell you they watch you like a hawk as you gather your personal belongings and you are immediately escorted off the property. You are not even allowed to say goodbye to anyone!

    Advice to Management

Show a little compassion when you are letting employees go.
If possible advanced warning would be GREAT. At least let people say goodbye to their co-workers!

    Pros

This is not for the feint of heart - this is a competitive company where hard work and smart people tend to make the difference. It's not always fair but in the end the company is always driving to move forward in an exciting field(s) - which is all I ask for out of my employer to keep me happy. There's some great people here.

    Cons

There's too many "idea people" which results in too many things to do and the cycle never seems to stop. If you can say no, you'll be fine. People who feel a need to always please are in trouble as you'll never please everyone here.

    Advice to Management

Well - good luck as TMO seems to be much different. I think a lot will change.

    Cons

There is constant change within the Biotech/Life Sciences industry.

    Pros

Occasionally come up with great ideas, but they change direction and do the exact opposite of what the idea they came up with in the first place.

    Cons

Same as above in Pros, but when they change direction/procedures they dont communicate to employees and have nerve to lecture/reprimand you for something they failed to tell you. Also very little compassion or concern for their employees.

    Advice to Management

Learn to talk to your employees properly, stop treating temp employees like dirt.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are competitive with the rest of the industry. Employee stock purchase at 15% discount is available.

    Cons

Not a classy management culture. They encourage a start-up mentality ("inovation" and "outside-the-box thinking", along with long hours, unrealistic workloads, constant changing of strategies and priorities), without any of the benefits of working at a start-up (flexible environment, listening to feedback from team members, direct financial benefit if the company exceeds financial goals). They will also let go of everyone and anyone at the drop of a hat. Through several "reorganizations", dozens of my managers and co-workers were let go, some after having spent almost 20 years at the company.

    Advice to Management

    Get classy, San Diego.
