What you’d expect from a first job

    Pros

I worked for the lifetime summer camp right out of high school because I had plans to go into education. The job was pretty fun, most of your day is swimming with the kids and then you have lunch with them and you’re SUPPOSED to lead games and stuff with them, but counselors were often lazy and just let the kids run around the gym. There was really no structure and it got kind of crazy when all the kids (ages 5-13) would be running in the gym. There were a lot of children with behavior issues in the camp and Courtney, The supervisor, never address these issues even when they were harming other children. If I were a parent I would not send my kid here for summer camp because there is no set schedule for the day. I understand kids having free time, but that free time often included children getting hurt because they were unsupervised messing around in the gym.

    Cons

Low pay, very few hours, getting sent home within an hour of start of your shift

Uncertain hours, but fun summer job

    Pros

Busy but fun schedule as a summer camp counselor. It feels like your job is to play all day, while making sure the day runs smoothly. If you work with DJ, you’ll have a good time

    Cons

Each week I could work as few as 20 or as many as 40 hours. The flexibility for vacation time is nice, but if you want to make as much money as possible, each week will ask for something different so don’t rely on working the same shift each week. Sometimes understaffed, other counselors have reported differences in pay, and tips were rare since there were so many other counselors and a lot of parents see it as a gym and not a camp. I also emailed about working for a 3rd summer there, but luckily got ghosted by the summer camp manager at the time and ended up doing Instacart

Good at first, then it went down hill, especially with the pandemic

    Pros

Free membership, fine location, large facility

    Cons

Still doesn’t take COVID seriously, part-time work is not as flexible considering most staff in the kids area are high schoolers, expected to stay longer after shifts for countless reasons, etc.
