    Pros

These people really do care. Every year they focus on ensuring the employees know their objectives, understand them, have a development plan, don't get too frustrated... The effort spent on people is huge (if not talking about salaries or bonuses).

    Cons

Objectives cannot be met just because is "nice working here", so management have realised they have to change the way they operate. Innovation and risk taking may be the key, but you have to be prepared, and you have to be bold and brave. Current management got to their positions developing other competencies not related to bravery... so Lilly ends up being a company focused in change, but not daring to do it!

    Advice to Management

Stop talking about change and innovations and do it!

    Pros

Very supportive environment and a lot of opportunities to prove yourself

    Cons

People were only there because its a good place to work, no one is actually passionate about pharma. Everyone tries to be a leader, so a lot of conflict and politics

    Advice to Management

You cant just have a company full of leaders, or there will be no one to follow

    Pros

The staff and facilities on the Erl Wood Site are some of the best in the business, you could not wish to meet a more dedicated, friendly and helpful group of people and than those in the Erl Wood Clinical Pharmacology group.

    Cons

The opportunities for career advancement are extremely limited unless you are prepared to relocate to Indianapolis.
There is a tendency for new senior management to be installed every 5 years or so and every time they insist on completely rebuilding the whole Clin Pharm department from the ground up, leading to a group that is in a constant state of turmoil, wasting time trying to figure out how to work best under the new structure when we should be dedicating our time to finding innovative solutions to help patients.

    Advice to Management

Stop restructuring! if it "ain't broke, don't fix it!", instead try focussing your efforts on supporting clinical innovation

    Pros

Good restaurant. Comfortable offices. Uber attention paid to health and safety, but not really the bits that matter! Good technology in meeting rooms.

    Cons

Day to day management is poor. It is too busy looking after its share options to make the right decisions for the business. Hugely political environment. If your face fits, you are in. Too few people left who know HOW to do the job. Too many "preeners". Company now run day to day by outside contractors, not Lilly full timers. No sense of leadership or direction, especially at middle to low levels. Projects ALWAYS late and over budget, delivering poor value for money. If you are competent, it will stifle you and drive you mad!

    Advice to Management

Promote those who can DO the job, not the ones who are the "yes men" (and women!) political animals. You've got a HUGE culture change to effect. Cut out the meetings where those who cannot do the jobs hide behind those who can. Cut out working from home - it is abused on an industrial scale! End matrix management. It is a recipe for not getting things done and creates a system where only popular managers who are usually ineffective can call on "favours" to get work done. Finally, end 360 degree appraisals because work shy employees use it to threaten good managers by making negative anonymously made comments if the manager designs to ask them to meet a deadline.
