I worked at Lincoln Financial Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ideas at Work Program. Knowledge Base.

    Cons

Numerous audit groups advising to reduce staff. (layoffs) Middle management has little to no say in the day to day changes and operations. Upper management unwilling to cooperate with front line management. Too much work in middle management without the support needed of upper management.

    Advice to Management

Learn the processes of the department you are supervising. These are PEOPLE, not just numbers!

I have been working at Lincoln Financial Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Striving to improve
    Kept a clean reputation
    Capable management
    Diligent coworkers
    Good branding
Company is working hard to remain competitive, and to gain that edge.

    Cons

Went through a major acquisition phase.
Took too long to congeal. Still disjointed, both internally and externally.
    Allowing competition to surpass itself.
Slow and indecisive in branding, and in consolidating management offices.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid of letting go of your old ways. You must shed some assets and deadwood management in order to gain in the big picture.

    Pros

Like the hours. And love when bene's didn't know they were getting unexpected money from grandparents, parents etc. from over 20 30 years ago.. love their reaction..

    Cons

No sick days you have to use PTO, which is fine.. but if you wake-up sick and call in on the same day they write you up.. which is called an "occurrence".. so in other words if you KNOW you will wake -up sick the next day. Send an email the day before, because you WILL get written-up. and after talking with a few co-workers in the same department it appears that they were selective on whom they wrote up..

    Advice to Management

They don't care about their employees. IF you have a department that is downsizing (so they say) and employees are leaving out the door, if you have posting for other departments, why not work your hardest to set that employee up somewhere else in the company... tells me that you don't care.

I have been working at Lincoln Financial Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, Great 401(k), Central Location, free parking, and nice on-site cafeteria

    Cons

There is little advancement potential. Promotions are done on a "friend" basis, and experience, training, and education do not count if you did not complete these at LFG. The "Peter Principle" is in full force with middle management. Most of them are poorly trained and have little regard for their employees. Overtime is mandatory to stay "in time service". New software system put in place was poor choice and after 2 years still is not fully operational or properly functions. Pay is poor for output expected.

    Advice to Management

The talent flight would stop if Upper Management trained Middle Managers to take care of their employees, Also increases in wage would keep talent from leaving once trained.

I worked at Lincoln Financial Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

they have a great benefits package. Middle management and your co-workers are good people.

    Cons

Certain areas of Group Protection are operating with roughly 30% less staff than a year ago due to budget constraints, but they have essentially the same workload spread among those remaining. Overtime demands are high.

The systems are outdated. Most work has to be done on spreadsheet outside of the system and considering the staffing issues, this makes employees even less efficient.

The facilities in Omaha are outdated and it's a struggle to recruit young talent to a building that's barely been refurbished since the 1950's.

Opportunities for advancement are extremely limited and seem to be based more on social relationships than job proficiency. The few promotions available seem to be awarded to those that socialize with managers at the bar after work instead of job performance. It feels like high school at times. Lots of politics. Hard working employees are forced to stay in the same job for years and only vague goals provided in evaluations regarding what it would take to move forward.

Ultimately, it appears to be senior managements goal to move much of the operation to Atlanta. The company leased out a large modern facility in Atlanta this year. Most of the space is currently empty. When people leave in Omaha, the jobs are mostly being replaced in Atlanta. If you are applying for one of the few available jobs in Omaha, keep this in mind.

    Advice to Management

Keeping your talented employees should be a priority. There needs to be opportunity for growth. The push to move the business to Atlanta isn't working.

I have been working at Lincoln Financial Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    The 401K plan is awesome

    Cons

Limited growth potential if you are in the Claims Customer Care/Contact Center. Growth is largely dependent on who you know when attempting to advance in the company not necessarily your skill set. Many areas within the company are allowed to work from home (which has been the case for awhile) meanwhile the contact center has not been offered this perk. This is felt even more when there is inclement weather. When other areas have the luxury to work from home we in the Claims/Customer Service Care Center are told to either stay home and take an occurrence or choose to be inconvenienced by being away from family and our homes (during a time when you should be there if a catastrophe happens) and asked to stay at a hotel for however long it takes for the weather to clear up. The micro management is suffocating in this area.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to learn to stop playing favorites and utilize all of the talent on their teams. Allow more growth for ALL and truly have a set career path that is workable. Listen to employee feedback and make the necessary changes to increase moral within departments (namely Claims/Customer Care Contact Center). Stop talking about employees that work under you with other Lincoln employees that DON'T have a need to know, it is unprofessional. In the area of benefits allow sick time separate from PTO (paid time off). Employees could better manage their time this way which would be a win win for all. As it stands now, it counts against us if the absence is not planned. But how can you plan to be sick? It would relieve employees to have this available instead of the current system which places many workers in a bind come the end of the year.
