I worked at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good hands on experience, different patients with multiple cormorbidities . Hospital is open to new grads. Some staff better to work than others. Union benefits.

    Cons

ER is a very unsafe environment to work in. Pay is terrible. When very violent patients attack staff, staff is usually blamed and reprimanded and patient is seen as victim. Hospital police sit on their phones all day and have no sense of urgency during volatile situations. RNs are over worked and underpaid and many are unqualified for their positions. But since there is a high turn over rate due to poor working conditions unqualified ones are hired out of desperation. Teaching and teamwork not promoted during meetings. Management too overwhelmed to listen to criticism. Unfair advancement of newer RNs due to politics and brown nosing. Unrealistic work load with provided staffing . Unsanitary hospital environment with hostile patients and rude staff.

    Advice to Management

Promote more teamwork and team player atmosphere. Hire component staff. Protect staff better after altercations with violent patients. Order more monitors and IV polls so staff doesn't spend time looking for simple items in critical situations. Increase work morale with better incentives and create a constant of work expectation throughout the ER. Update the dirty cafeteria. Be leaders not paycheck collectors.
