I have been working at Lincoln Public Schools - Lincoln, NE full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great schools within the district. If you want to move around to different grades or schools.

    Cons

It takes a long time to get decent pay. Mandatory retirement can take a big chunk of salary which can be difficult for single parents. I'm at 42,000 after 6 years, but bring home only around 38,000.

I have been working at Lincoln Public Schools - Lincoln, NE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Two plan periods for teachers
    Good pension
    Good benefits
Technology is updated in the district
$225 for teachers to spend on classroom each year

    Cons

Lots and lots of meetings (district and building)
District changes directions a lot regarding processes to implement
Lots of extra tasks that don't have to do with teaching
District office doesn't understand what it is like in the schools (in general)
Inflated salaries for district office (and not much oversight)

    Advice to Management

Management has a great situation. There is not much oversight or accountability. Stay neutral in your opinions if you want to move up the ladder.

  11. "As a Para, great job while going to school, not a job to live off of."

    Pros

Great culture, great flexibility with substitutes

    Cons

Growth only comes with degrees. As a para, it would be very hard to support a family off of the income. Not much say in anything really. During my years here, I have had my pay reduced twice because money needed to come from somewhere, and paras seem to be expendable. It can be extremely hard work depending on the types of students you are working with. There is often a lack of leadership, training, and advocacy for paras.

    Advice to Management

Training should be available for paras upon hire, even the basics. Have an appreciation for those who are doing the (literally) dirty work, and instead of lowering our wages while upping yours, think about the fact than many paras are trying to support a family and live off of this pay.
