I worked at Linear Technology full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The best analog design company in the world. Good hours and work life balance compared to other companies in the area. Good compensation although that may be changing with the ADI merger.

    Cons

The company has lost touch with its soul. Too many H1B workers working long hours and forcing domestic Americans to keep up. Certain departments have preferential hiring towards Chinese applicants despite lackluster performance.

Company is extremely cheap with resources to the point where it's actually amusing. The benefit of this is that sometimes you get to make a piece of test equipment from old junk.

    Advice to Management

Try to hire people who actually enjoy analog engineering. There are plenty of engineers out there who started out as hobbyists initially and would be very good if given the chance to prove themselves. Solving technical interview questions does not allow for good judgement of a candidate.

Instead of hiring H1B applicants from top graduate programs who only see analog engineering as a paycheck, try to find people who live and breathe engineering. They're still out there.

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance, total compensation is good in the industry, fair benefits, no need to work overtime

    Cons

The company structure is very flat and the career path is very slow. Salary increase is also slow.

I worked at Linear Technology full-time

    Pros

Company culture rewards individual performance. High compensation for high performers. Flat management structure. Among best managed in industry. You can make your point at any level, if you know your stuff and are willing to stand up

    Cons

Limits to resources, kept out of good markets for unwillingness to make investments beyond those with a very high and immediate payback.
Extreme profitability at the cost of some growth.

    Advice to Management

Hope the ADI merger did you well. I expect more tedious and less lucrative existence after merger.

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable company, profit sharing, 6 week sabbatical every 5 years. This company has products that have been running for the duration of the company's existence, which illustrates their commitment to sustaining technology that works well. Very few "lay-offs" in the decade and a half that I've worked here. Easy going culture in design support (less so in design itself).

    Cons

Few lay-offs means that burned-out employees who are under-performers or who take advantage of the company's generosity are taking up space that could be filled by enthusiastic employees. Old boys club mentality. There are no females in executive management. Very few women designers. The few women who are in middle management positions tend to emulate the egotistical leadership style of male middle management. Bias towards hiring from particular ethnic groups, except in design, where designers are mostly Caucasian males.

    Advice to Management

Linear executives ignored the writing on the wall. Sadly, the arrogance of ignoring shareholders' desire for expansion and growth year after year, ultimately landed the company in a vulnerable position that allowed the company to be bought out.

    Pros

Work with the best in the industry. Work life balance is great. Working environment is mostly pleasant. Conservative finacially. Salary is competitive. Job security is high.

    Cons

It is difficult to advance in this company since the structure is very flat. Raise is capped. Equipment purchase is inconsistently scrutinized by upper management. It is common that engineers bring in their own equipments. Certain groups are internally divided. Upper management is getting worse as company gets bigger. Under utilize young talents. IT departments are for the birds.

    Advice to Management

It is important to keep the work life balance becuase that is the biggest draw. It is not a good idea to use PC with Pentium D nowadays. Engineers are the main source for growth. Most feels that upper management stepping on gas and the brake at the same time. Smart people should not do that.

I worked at Linear Technology full-time

    Pros

Very stable company. Not many people leave. Very little turnover. Many, many people with 20-30 years in the company. Nice annual parties. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Old infrastructure. Not many perks like the Googles and Facebooks. Not much in terms of career ladder.

    Advice to Management

Open up the purses a bit and upgrade the technology.

    Advice to Management
