I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Linear as a whole is well managed. Good business model, high profit margin. Good quality control in matured product lines. Not necessary high tech.

    Cons

Not every group's performance can meet Linear's standard. There are still poorly managed, low productive groups eating company's profit.

    Advice to Management

Each product line manager is an anchor. with Linear's money, a superstar should be hired as the anchor. An incompetent manager is unlikely to hire good engineers.

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Solid in most areas. Good engineering talent especially in Design and Applications. Can be financially rewarding and job security is good. 4 or 6 week (depending on position) sabbatical every 5 years in addition to normal vacation.

    Cons

Company culture is somewhat stuffy, especially considering that it is a high tech company. Company tends to really adhere to the phrase "do more with less".
    Demanding.

I have been working at Linear Technology (More than a year)

    Pros

Low pressure office atmosphere and always surrounded by very intelligent people. If you like a no no-BS kind of workspace then this is it. Attrition is also very low as they value their employees.

    Cons

Seems to be perpetually stuck 10 years in the past when it comes it infrastructure and IT. They may make some of the highest performing analog ICs in the world but software and IT are definitely not up to snuff for a midsized company.

    Advice to Management

Modernize internally. It will help productivity greatly.

  6. "Great, but very political company."

    Pros

Money and creativity. Technical expertise. High budget. Activities at lunch. Testing expertise. Sabbatical- 5 weeks off after 5 years. High expectations.

    Cons

Wrong side of the aisle is in trouble. No internet. Memos are not stored. If you aren't from National you're in trouble. Very political.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Among the highest compensation in the business, possibly the best profit sharing anywhere. As in average of 30 to 40%. Work with some of the brightest engineering talent in the world. Design Engineers get to take their product from initial design through production release. Are also held accountable every step of the way, so you need to do more than "design."

    Cons

Very high pressure / stress atmosphere. Very little positive feedback. Little comeradery, not much in the way of team atmosphere. Work-Life balance nonexistent. Lateral transfers strongly discouraged. Unless you are a workaholic, I advise getting in, making some money and learning what you can, then get out before you take too much damage. I would advise 5 years max, take your sabbatical and use some of the time soul-searching and checking out the job market.

    Advice to Management

    Management does not "take advice."
If they did I would say find some ways to incorporate even a little bit of team building and work-life balance. It could just pay off financially.
Update internal procedures / processes to the 21st century. The company has become too large to continue doing things "because we have always done it this way and it works"

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Low turnover, nice profit sharing payouts (2x/ year, over 25% the last couple of years), 1.5 month paid sabbatical after 5 years, above average medical/ dental plan design with low monthly contributions, 4% raises each year (most companies in the market are between 2.5-3%), No BS culture straight forward/ direct, performance focused, most managers are honest/ fair and will vouch for their employees/ department, good people, stable company

    Cons

Employees tend to want to retire here which is a good thing but also makes it difficult to move up the ladder. Old school mind-set "if it doesn't break it doesn't need to be changed", no frills (no free food, gym, etc) but it's not that important, you need to speak up if you want something (management doesn't give it to you, you have to ask for it)

    Advice to Management

Be open to newer ways of operating (less paperwork more online)

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits/compensation package. Close to home in a suburban environment (light commuting traffic). Comparable base salary to other like companies but the semi-annual profit sharing on base and OT(average 29% over last 9 years), attendance bonus, ERT bonus, 100% sellback of unused sick time, floating holiday and vacation time as well as the 1-month sabbatical every 5 years makes it a superior employer.

    Cons

The company's attempt to run with a very lean crew makes for good profits but also makes it difficult to utilize earned time off. The generous compensation package makes it difficult to want to leave when you get burnt out (not sure if that's a bad thing). Because of the low attrition rate it is difficult to change shifts when life circumstances require a change. The company is also prone to witch hunts and knee jerk reactions when issues arise rather than spending time and money up front to prevent the foreseeable occurrences before they happen. Has become less in touch with employee needs over the last 5+ years in favor of profits and what I term "management success trophies" (eye candy projects)

    Advice to Management

Reinvest in your employee base. A happy, loyal, focused employee is worth 2 bots that just do as they are told. The best leaders will have employees that desire to see the company succeed vs. just coming to work and doing what they are told because it keeps the paycheck coming.
