I worked at Liskow & Lewis full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The firm is very professional. I worked for a Sr. Partner in the Business Law / Secured Transactions section. The work requires a dedication to detail, lots of courthouse abstracting title, ability to read and understand technical legal terms. After I had been there a while, I was able to negotiate a flexible schedule.

    Cons

The only con is that the Senior Partners are serious about attention to detail and you will be corrected even if you forgot to put a period. On the upside, it taught me to be very deligent in my work.

    Advice to Management

    The pay could be better.

I worked at Liskow & Lewis full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They do a pretty good job of duping their associates into believing that the firm is one big happy family, rather than a business. Lots of unwritten rules, though, and heaven help you if you aren't there by 8:30 a.m.

    Cons

A weird place. Smart attorneys. Terribly managed. Associates are expected to handle things that most firms give to administrative support staff but do not receive any type of credit for doing so (billing or credit hours). You'll work for partners who will be kind to your face and criticize you behind your back. As an associate, you'll never know where you actually stand until they show you the door or tell you that... you're going to make partner. Also, it's rarely acknowledged, but this is a Republican hot bed. Wear your suit, even if you're just doing 18 hours of document review in your office. If you don't, someone will make a comment about it to management.

    Advice to Management

Liskow's retention rates have been absolutely terrible for the past decade. They tell you that they are very selective in who they hire and that if they like you enough to hire you, you're eventually going to make partner. The numbers say otherwise, however. Only 2 of the 20 or so associates who I worked with during my time at Liskow ever made partner--the rest were either quietly shown the door or left for better... opportunities.

I have been working at Liskow & Lewis full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The staff, managing partner and office manager are awesome!

    Cons

Lacking in staff benefits, training, bonuses and the salary is at best, average. Watch out for the litigation groups specially the "newer" one whose Shareholder is a total DIVA - wants everything yesterday and only talks to you to yell at you while his face is going red even though he is already faked baked. Very condensing and totally selfish person who obviously does not care about the staff that works for him.... He will only talk about himself and is too good to even ask how your day is going . There are other partners and attorneys that also are very mean to their secretaries.

    Advice to Management

You will lose good people by allowing attorneys to treat them bad. You will also not be able to compete with other Houston firms with the salary and benefits which are currently offered.

    Pros

Liskow & Lewis places a strong emphasis on maintaining a collegial working environment, and all of the lawyers are smart and down to earth.

    Cons

The firm could do a better job in utilizing technology in the practice of law. And sometimes the younger associates don't get as much experience in the courtroom because most of the firm's cases are high-dollar/high-stakes litigation.

    Advice to Management

The firm could do a better job in utilizing technology in the practice of law (i.e., moving towards a paperless practice) and finding ways to get younger associates more experience in the courtroom.

I worked at Liskow & Lewis full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible, friendly, excellent at explaining projects

    Cons

Too professional at times-wish there could be more personal connections

    Advice to Management

Underdogs (I.e, staff) make up the majority of employees, hear their voices too.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Liskow & Lewis full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There weren't many pros with this job. It was a consistent paycheck.

    Cons

There is a definite hierarchy in the workplace. As the office assistant you are considered the lowest on the totem pole. The lawyers are complete babies and get upset over things like a stapler running out of staples and its always your fault. If anyone asks you to do anything you are expected to stop what you are doing (even if it is important) and complete their wish or else they will get upset, and again- you... will get in trouble. The compensation isn't worth it. The hours are long 9-6 and the commute from downtown is a long one. You must clock out for lunch. That's right, you don;t get paid for lunch even being on a salary job. (unless you're a lawyer)

    I worked at Liskow & Lewis full-time

    Pros

Great work/life balance, fair benefit package with good flexibility. One of the better law firms to work for in New Orleans

    Cons

Poorly organized administration and leadership, with no employment review to further personal growth. Attorney staff relationships are strained.

Legal Assistant in New Orleans, LA

I worked at Liskow & Lewis

    Pros

Smart attorneys to work with. Firm well respected among piers.

    Cons

Unfair and inconsistant treatment of support staff. Absence of merit raises and virtual non-existent cost of living salary adjustments (2% in 2007-2009) when firm enjoyed record profits during same period.

    Advice to Management

Be fair and respectful of staff talent and provide financial incentives based on individual skills and job performance.
