I worked at Lixar IT full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart staff and a great place to learn

    Cons

Salary isn't too competitive unless bonus kicks in. There are often grey areas in terms of compensation when deciding how to pay someone for working overtime or on-call

    Advice to Management

Make base salary more competitive and fairly treat employees for extra work and you will be a great fit for everyone!

I have been working at Lixar IT (More than a year)

    Pros

I've held a wide variety of roles and can honestly say that working at Lixar is among the absolute best experiences I've had.

Team collaboration, support and openness to trying new things is all excellent. Friendly, smart people who share a desire to succeed. Active in the community and make hiring kind and thoughtful people a priority which makes the work atmosphere incredible.

Great focus on coaching and career development. Flexible hours and working arrangements. New office space is great.

    Cons

    Actual Cons

    - No direct overtime compensation. Also no forced overtime, but it does happen. A clear plan to compensate those who work extra would be nice.

    - Salaries are average but bonuses are good.

    - No RRSP matching.

    Realities

    - Work won't always be handed to you on a silver platter - you have to be willing to be proactive.

    - Your attitude will be considered as often as your technical skill.

    - You may not always have the opportunity to work on the exact thing you want to work on. Sometimes you'll have to take one for the team and contribute to projects that are not in your wheelhouse.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. Very exciting times and I am excited to be part of the Lixar journey.

    Cons

Can't say enough good things. I miss working here!

    Advice to Management

Thank you for the opportunity with the company.

I worked at Lixar IT full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This may be the best kept secret in Ottawa. The new office space may be only second to Shopify for the cool factor, plus its a very good place to actually be productive. Leadership is young, the work is for internationally known brands in technology that is very cool. You can tell your grandparents what you're working on and they'll both be impressed and understand what your company does.

Note that parking problems mentioned in other reviews are long gone because of the new location.

Staff who take initiative and want to stand out and deliver will be noticed and rewarded. Deadwood is dealt with fairly quickly. To everything I observed, people are treated very fairly. The president is far more approachable than most people think nor is he grumpy though people seem to think he is. The CEO is fair and approachable. This is not an ego-driven company, there is plenty of room for all sorts of people and personality types, but best to not be a complainer and to take charge of your own issues.

HR is very competent, professional and discreet.

    Cons

Direction can be a little vague, but they expect their staff are good people who will take initiative. I've seen people get lost in the shuffle and orientation wasn't what it could be. Good people can sometimes get beaten up unfairly if the wrong people get the wrong impression of their work, so be your own advocate and stand up for yourself. Leadership will respect that.

    Advice to Management

Keep being decisive and action oriented. Keep infusing the company with the culture that got you where you are and keep making sure that employees are sharing in the company's success.

I worked at Lixar IT full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong team dynamics when in an effective unit.
    Minimal micro-management, in most cases.
Often visionary concepts are actually implemented.

    Cons

Silo approach for teams, little inter-departmental communication.
Inability to hire or retain experienced developers. Over reliance on co-op and external contractors.
Weak team leadership and execution of project life-cycles.

    Advice to Management

Stop following trends. One cannot be a leader of a trend.

    Pros

    - Everyone is nice and friendly, willing to help each other, not just saying hi.
     - The director treat us once a month with Thai food.
     - Very organized development and serious code review.

    Cons

No real cons actually. Maybe they should provide more training to new people.

    People were mostly very friendly

    Pros

It is what you make it.
Organization is flexible enough not to pigeon-hole you into one position or project for life.
It's a small to medium sized company that has its growing pains but honestly cares about its employees and their growth.
Cool environment to work in, relaxed, casual, yet professional.

    Cons

Same Cons that apply to all IT companies this size trying to grow and reach the next level.
There will be tight deadlines, hard work and everything will not go as planned.
It is not a company where you can punch a clock, sit in your cube and be anonymous.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more often with employees, provide unified business vision to all staff so we can decide if believe in it or not.
