I worked at Loblaw Companies (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people, great place to gain skills

    Cons

large company with many employees makes it hard to climb up the corporate ladder. Lots of unpaid over time!

    Advice to Management

Better succession planning for employees with constant updates will lead to better employee retention. Many good employees leave due to lack of clear career path and mismanagement.

I worked at Loblaw Companies (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good sense of community within the work environment.

    Cons

Worked there for 5 years. The only raise I got was when minimum wage increased.

    Advice to Management

Pharmacists are humans too, please be considerate of them and the techs and stop cutting hours.

I worked at Loblaw Companies full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, Goodlife fitness onsite, employee discount at grocery stores

    Cons

It is unbelievably political. The honest and hard-working her‘s are the first to suffer and are very rarely promoted. Advancement within the company is based solely on politics, not on merit, ability or professionalism. If you feel you are being mistreated, you cannot go to HR for help, as the only result will almost certainly be detrimental to your job and the longevity of it. It is common that people cry at work because of how they are treated, but no-one seems to care or do anything about it, except target those who don’t “play the game“ and make their lives miserable.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to actually manage. If an employee is not succeeding, it is the manager’s fault. Learn to care more about your staff than about yourself.

    Pros

Company has many avenues for career advancement, pay is considerably more than competition, get to meet lots of really great industry people.

    Cons

While pay is good, they expect you to work very long days in excess of 12 hours to compensate for the high wage. Since you are on salary, you are not entitled to overtime, stat holiday pay or even the stat holidays off. Benefits are not great, no short term disability, no vision care, dental is less than 80% covered, not a great plan. Very heavy corporate presence from head office in the stores, lots of store visits from corporate so lots of pressure to exceed targets.

    Advice to Management

Offer a better benefits package. Promote a better work/life balance for managers, and not just say it, actually do it.

I worked at Loblaw Companies as a contractor

    Pros

Top level management have a future focused thinking

    Cons

Feels like a sweat shop at times

    Advice to Management

    Practice what you preach.

Some old guard midlevel management need to be replaced as they don't fit the futuristic vision of upper management.

    Pros

    It is Very team oriented
    Understanding manager
    People are nice and helpful
Depending where you work the customers are nice

    Cons

I've been working there for two weeks and I still didn't get paid when I told my manager once already and I still didn't get paid hopefully they pay me the third week in it's ridiculous that a large cooperation can't pay their workers. Most employers are on calls and there isn't much room for growth

    Advice to Management

    Improve payroll
Schedule more people in don't just call them two hours before a shift that is needed to be filled
