    Pros

    Lots of opportunities to for upward movement. Great opportunities to work on some cool projects.

    Cons

    Large company, so you can get lost in the weeds, so to speak. Wish medical insurance was a little better, but it's still pretty good. Some programs work massive amounts of overtime.

    I worked at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - I experienced great work/life balance. I rarely ever had to work more than 40 hours per week to do my job. However, I know of others who were not so lucky, and their reward for closer to 60 hours weeks was "cold Little Ceaser's Pizza".
    - "Hard to get fired". At LM it's known that there are "only three ways to get fired" ... mischarging hours, selling company secrets, or purposefully looking at pornography at work. However, they become more and more strict about what you can/cannot do in downtime during my 5+ years there that "mischarging" lost all meaning and became an arbitrary method of removing someone from a position.
    - I can testify that the other engineers I worked with in ADP were great, great people. Intelligent, upstanding... in the group I was with, we referred to ourselves as a "family" for good reason.
    - I did get an "in-level" promotion after being there a couple years and then a full level promotion the year after that. However, career opportunities can be a bit deceiving since the only way to move up in the company is to move around in the company, that is, you literally have to jump from division to division (including moving around the country) just to get anything.

    Cons

    Where to start...
    - There were literal rats in our workspace, and the only thing the corporation would be willing to do would put down mouse traps and then remove the dead bodies hours after we called to complain about them. The rats could also be heard in the walls/ceiling of the restroom, and a dead rat was very visible in an access panel in the restroom.
    - There was also a fly problem in the workspace when a pipe leaked brown liquid in the ceiling.
    - It depended on your area, but I would venture to say the majority of the "plant" building (that is, the main building in Ft. Worth) had not been updated since the 70's and would best be described as "dank". Even the less dank areas are still windowless concrete bunkers.
    - I had 8 different managers in 5 years. The last two were not even cleared to the classified area in which I worked, so they had no idea what I even worked on (and, as such, had no loyalty).
    - Will not pay nearly what the position is worth, relying on the "stability" and work/life balance to make up the difference.
    - Old computers. For a company that wants to appear like it's on the bleeding edge of technology, they were permanently at least a few years behind in machine capability, operating system, and application version (Visual Studio 10 instead of 15).
    - It's very, very, very corporate. You have to watch your tongue, lest you say or do something deemed inappropriate, and you have to watch your back, lets a corporate ladder-climber use you as target practice.

    Advice to Management

    Catch up to current technology and work practices. Give your engineers some leash to be themselves. Stop shuffling middle managers around and calling it "progress".

    Pros

    - Awesome scenery at the Deer Creek Facility.
    - Gave me the opportunity to learn AWS cloud technology.
    - Many employees that have worked for LM say that when contracts are terminated, managers were always able to find them new positions in the company.
    - LM employees get free access to Safari books online.
    - The Deer Creek Facility has a decent gym, with free weights, bench press, 4 treadmills, .... Also has a racquetball court.
    - Some programs offer ability to travel overseas (but is not the norm)

    Cons

    - Big company does not mean stability. For example, I was hired in 2015, but program was decided to be moved to MD in 2016, so the entire team was threatened to be laid off. There were about 60 of us. Now, about 20. And the deadline is end of fiscal year.
    - Management is the typical political scenario. They say they care about their employees, but actually don't, or perhaps don't know how to. For example, Management had no plan on moving employees to new positions before announcing end of program.
    - Very slow hiring process. There's an internal job board, but the process is so slow that response from inquiries take months.
    - Got food poisoning from the cafeteria and found several other people also threw up.
    - A lot of bureaucracy to get software installed on your workstation. For example, took 3 weeks to install Notepad++.
    - Possibility of losing your clearance. For example, if you have a TS/SCI clearance, but the project's customer requires a Polygraph, LM will not read you on for your SCI, so you will lose your SCI clearance if you wait for your Poly adjudication for more than 2 years, which is highly likely. Some employees' clearance was completely removed due to LM security ineptitude.
    - Performance evaluation process takes a lot of time/effort out of your day. A lot of bureaucracy again.
    - Weird Paid Time Off (PTO) plan. 2 weeks of vacation + supplemental 1 week vacation + undetermined personal time off that you can take unlimited amount because there's no written rule, but is generally frowned upon if you take more than a week. You can carry over only 2 weeks vacation to the next year, but can only accrue up to 400 hours.
    - Pay is on the low side. They claim benefits and stability, but that's probably not true. Medical/dental/vision for employee+spouse+children is about $560/month for premiums. Not too high compared to other small companies, but since small companies will pay you more than $1,000/month more than your cost of benefits, the LM pay seems a bit low. If your level of performance is high, you get 1% pay raise.
    - Expectations are higher than your pay grade. For example, management expected a Level 5 engineer to attend symposiums, write patents, publish journals, but his pay was on the level of a senior programmer and he was not given funding to attend symposiums.
    - Numerous compliance training requirements.

    Pros

    The job security is high, the work is typically interesting, and the people were great.

    Cons

    The bureaucracy of getting through to higher levels of management. The employee review process is very long and tedious. Depending on the program you work, career advancement may be slow.

    Advice to Management

    Continue tweaking the employee review process. It's good that you gather input directly from the employee, but the stakeholder feedback gets to be too much for higher level employees.

    Pros

    Great entry job out of college, good people to work with.
    You will get a clearance and learn the business of the military which is applicable to other defense industries.
    Decent pay in the beginning with good bumps, by the time you get to lvl 3-4 your raises will be minimal every year even with good ratings.

    9/80 work schedule (can be a good or a bad thing) This means you get every other Friday off however you are expected to work 9 hours a day + commute time which depends on your situation.

    Cons

    Work/Life balance depends on the program you are working for.

    "Innovation" is scarce as most programs are built around a sea of GOTS/COTS - expect to be continuously fighting garbage that wasn't meant to work together as Software/Systems.

    Benefits (Health, etc) are diminishing / cost more every year as LM manages their own health exchange.

    Generally will not pay overtime unless your program is on fire (normally subject to 45hours+ before OT will be paid - not including the 'free 5 hours' to get to 45). This gets more interesting with 9/80 schedules + expected "All in" attitude.

    Current CEO (defaulted) seems to have something to prove in not a good way (opinion).

    Advice to Management

    There is a clear difference in what is advertised as "management":
    1) Program managers ( Program day to day - business only, never liable for bad decisions - get bonuses).
    2) Leads (Do the bulk of managing team and complaining about impossible expectations)
    3) Functional Managers (Ensure you take training, performance reports, etc, based on new segment consolidations they are generally unable to move you out of a program or actively enhance your career as designed). -- Therefore you will have to move yourself forcefully - most people do this at the end of Lvl 2 and come back in 2 years as a Lvl 4 skipping the 5-6 year brick wall in-between.

    Pros

    It's great when you're first starting. I've gained a ton of experience and I've enjoyed the people I've worked with.

    Cons

    Lockheed's salary isn't competitive once you've become more experienced. Management values leadership contributions more than technical contributions. I found myself in a situation where in order to grow within Lockheed I needed to do less technical work and more managerial work. The technical path at Lockheed is very narrow because at the end of the day, they rather have a lower level engineer perform a task than a high level engineer. It makes sense from a business and cost management perspective, but it's not good if you want to stay technical.

    Advice to Management

    I understand that having high salaries decreases your competitiveness but making employees feel that you care more by offering stock options as part of the compensation may help.
