I worked at Loews Corporation full-time

    Pros

There is an incentive bonus, but it is very small and does not correlate to any metrics or to the 25% one that is listed on your personal benefits on the intranet.

Work life balance and team atmosphere before layoffs.

    Cons

Management did a poor job with resource allocation and now an even worse selection of the 8 IT people they let go as most are “worker bees”, experts in supporting and enhancing primary financial systems now it is left to less knowledgeable resources who will struggle just to maintain these systems and put out fires.

Loews has no performance or reward systems in place for the employee to prove they achieved or did not achieve goals so Management who oversees the systems has to use their own judgement of "who they like" to reward as most don't even log into the systems to even begin to understand their complexities.

Loews holding company is no longer a family atmosphere and it is now considered the same mentality as a Private Equity or Corporate America and loyalty does not matter after firing 8 IT people on Feb. 10, some who have worked there for years, having to leave immediately, escorted out like a criminal with 10 minutes to pack their stuff and not being able to say goodbye to anyone or anyone saying goodbye to them.

    Advice to Management

Offer voluntary packages out of respect for long time employees, work from home policy, review cost cutting decisions as they set an example to the remaining employees and drive the fate of employee retention as " What Goes Around Comes Around ..."

I worked at Loews Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Team player atmosphere, wonderful management and staffordable to work with. Great computer software training, too.

    Cons

None that I had. I spent 4 and a half very good years working for 3 vice presidents. I left to have my son and get married - began a new chapter in my life. If I could, I would love to return to Loews Corp and Loews Hotels corporate offices.

    Advice to Management

    None

I have been working at Loews Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Middle Generation family members are very thoughtful and encouraging.
Most people who work there really enjoy it.
The company pays on the high side of the normal range

    Cons

The company is run like a family business, where nepotism trumps capability and fairness.
Internal politics often reward aggressive or sneaky types, over the best and most thoughtful employees.
Folks are afraid to adopt change or upset the apple cart, either for fear or running afoul of the politics, and risk losing their jobs, or because they don't see any upside in taking such risks. The result is a lot of CYA mediocrity

    Advice to Management

Require all family members to work for a decade or more elsewhere, so they have some credibility when they arrive.
Bring in outside leadership, as the 3rd generation is not going to be ready by working in-house.
Develop more quantitative, 360 degree review measures, so the annual reviews are less of a boss pleasing popularity contest and more of a measurement of successes and failures, with a map towards improvement.

I have been working at Loews Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Get to travel throughout the country and possibly internationally. Most of the staff are easy going and nice to get a long with. The hours are very friendly. Very rarely do you leave past 6 pm.

    Cons

The turnover is very high. Management plays the office politics game a little too much. The places you travel domestically aren't attractive locations (mostly outside of Houston, Oklahoma, Louisiana) and are typically two week audits. I was told that travel would be approximately 20% of the time but was actually over 50%. Compensation is not that high and management does not care for the staff that much.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend that they do not talk behind others backs as often as they do. Treat employees with more respect so they do not leave after 8 months and create a schedule that is more than two weeks in advance.

    Pros

Great knowledgeable people, excellent compensation, great location and office, corporate culture, management is usually very friendly and you are not bogged down by meeting after meeting.

    Cons

none really it has all the things you would come to expect in the day to day grind. One place that could be improved I would guess would be the IT structure.
