I have been working at London Borough of Camden full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great front line staff who work hard despite everything. Good pension. Hot desking has its pros and cons.

    Cons

The council in general: They are forcing all staff to change their contact of employment giving them less money but making them work more hours. Very poor pay and annual leave entitlement for new staff joining on the new contract. Awful new building in Kings Cross - dirty and has had several infestations of mice and moths. Very expensive staff cafe. No staff room. In Adult Social Care: Far too many restructures that are used to get rid of higher paid staff on the old contact and employ people to do the same job on the new contract for a much lower salary. Very low staff morale. Massive staff turnover. Poor performance not dealt with. No progression unless your face fits. Behind closed doors people are picked for jobs before the advert has even gone out. They pay lip service to work life balance and no one is allowed to work from home more than 1 day a week - in other parts of the council some people work from home up to 4 days a week. Bullying is ignored. Favouritism is rife. Toxic department to work in.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of all managers in Adult Social Care and start again. Pay more attention to what is going on in Adult Social Care. Radical change is needed quickly.

I have been working at London Borough of Camden full-time

    Pros

Very flexible with the ability to work from home regularly allowing you to complete your work within specified deadlines, whilst balancing your personal requirements. Lovely people, everyone is friendly, accommodating and try to help where they can. Everyone is hardworking and when held to accountant will complete their work to their best ability. All the teams i have worked with in order to complete my working tasks were always willing to help, only problem is that for some task no one is sure who exactly is accountable or responsible. CEO Mike is a lovely person, very friendly and associates with all colleagues regardless of your level, he even sits on the same floor as junior staff members, i found that really refreshing.

    Cons

Too much planning and not enough implementation, we tend to plan and then re-plan, it is important to actually get the work done. Accountability - in some cases it may be difficult to tell who is accountable for a particular process, we must ensure all elements of a process is delegated to an accountable individual to ensure the work is actually done and this must be captured within performance appraisals. (this is been noted and is being improved) Too segregated - work streams are far to segregated meaning you have to work with many people to get your job done Pay is far too low in comparison to other local authorities in London. Staff turnover is extremely high

    Advice to Management

Pay should be inline with other London boroughs, might help reduce staff turnover.

I worked at London Borough of Camden

    Pros

Good location for commute though now very built up. Salary ok but expect to multi task and take ownership colleagues are ok and pleasant even in this goldfish bowl of open plan working . Work life balance ok but not remarkable

    Cons

I have found after 20 years service that the environment is not conducive to a happy working life. Managers criticise rather than praise and are all too clicky with one another . It feels very much a culture of divide and rule . Work load is unmanageable and feels like a conveyor belt . Morale is low and staff turnover is high . Staff are burnt out and attitude is like " if you don't like it ? There's the door !" If it was not for a remaining mortgage I would of left 5 years ago when I saw the writing on the wall

    Advice to Management

Managers need to be things out as there are still too many who are ineffective to even micro manage ! Most need to learn to be more appreciative of excellent staff and be more assertive with underperforming staff . It seems the more you do the more managers put upon you. Respect seems to have taken back seat to what staff want and managers certainly don't lead by example . The good ones have gone the drift wood and bullies remain
