I worked at London Metropolitan University part-time

    Pros

Great lecturers and staff Interesting students Rewarding work Great location Flexible opportunities - part-time work available for lecturers

    Cons

The management of the university is chronically disorganised and it is constantly having to make staff redundant - every two or three years - which means staff morale is on the floor. I was only there three years and was asked to reapply for my job twice. It's such a shame as there are great people there working very hard to do the best for the students.

    Advice to Management

    Get a grip!

I worked at London Metropolitan University part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Mostly very friendly and supportive colleagues.

    Cons

    Prospects of growth are nonexistent.

    Advice to Management

Well like many universities the higher level management is just trying to pull a rabbit out the hat and just focusing on gimmicks rather taking real concrete steps...

I worked at London Metropolitan University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Most colleagues are great and highly committed (despite being repeatedly culled). Students are likewise great but under-resourced. Hard to find more pros, frankly

    Cons

Dreadful leadership, who have accepted the most stupid of models for provision of Higher Education. A culture of intimidation prevails, and rounds of redundancies recur each year.

    Advice to Management

A clear out of the higher echelons is long overdue, but since that includes most of the management to whom this is addressed....

I worked at London Metropolitan University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Although once a great place to work (pre-2004), in recent years, hard to identify any positives at all

    Cons

Incompetent management of dubious integrity, incapable of discharging basic managerial responsibility. Culture of bullying actively promoted by senior management and HR. Long term financial mismanagement has led to endless redundancy rounds, involuntary demotions and extensive use of zero hours contracts (and hourly paid lecturers receive truly appalling treatment). Many building closures and lack of investment has... led to a steep deterioration in the quality of facilities. Avoid like the plague.

I worked at London Metropolitan University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Friendly place near Liverpool street station so from Essex good commute. Bloomberg facility was fun to teach. In the earlier years plenty of opportunity to travel with work. India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Turkey, Qatar.

    Cons

3 years of section 118 redundancies. Bad feeling between staff and management after winding down of research and business division.

    Advice to Management

Try to get feel good factor back and focus on increasing revenue as well as costs. Corporate governance was an issue with the government.

    Cons

Lecturers are expected to take on far too much The management are very stressy and the ethos is hard-nosed from the top-down.
