    Great lecturers and staff Interesting students Rewarding work Great location Flexible opportunities - part-time work available for lecturers

    Cons

    The management of the university is chronically disorganised and it is constantly having to make staff redundant - every two or three years - which means staff morale is on the floor. I was only there three years and was asked to reapply for my job twice. It's such a shame as there are great people there working very hard to do the best for the students.

    Get a grip!

    I worked at London Metropolitan University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Friendly environment and committed academic and admin staff. Good location and close to Tube. Inclusive environment and good opportunities for working part time/flexible hours.

    Cons

    Staff struggle to do their jobs, faced with a lot of bueaucracy. Lots of change and little time to implement changes before new ones are introduced.

    Advice to Management

    Please listen to the staff, includes academics, admin and support. You have some fantastically committed staff, and a wealth of ideas you could tap to solve some of the issues at grass-roots level.

    I have been working at London Metropolitan University

    Pros

    London Met is well located in Central and North London. Its boasts a diverse student body, made up of over 28,000 students of all ages from the UK and 155 countries across the globe. The university provides full- and part-time postgraduate, professional and vocational education in Britain. The 485 courses on offer are planned in consultation with employers and examining bodies in commerce, industry, the world of... art and design, the financial services industries and other professions. Both campuses are well serviced by public transport and local shops. Its effectiveness is in its sheer size and location.

    Cons

    LondonMet consists of two former colleges that in 10 years have not amalgamated. The ICT is antiquated & software is inadequate & unreliable. The leadership including the now-disgraced Vice Chancellor Brian Roper and the Board of Governors (forced to stand down by the government) and management culture is very questionable and lack-lustre bordering on inadequate and self serving. After years of refusing to... participate in the University League Tables the current VC has rightly attempted to address the reality of LondonMet heard-on by submitting LondonMet to the League Tables assessment. Hence out of 118 UK universities LondonMet holds up the table at 118. http://tinyurl.com/czzuwc Processes and procedures are not adhered to or at worst are given the impression of being adhered to. One concern is for the safety of their employees and students. Witnessing a emergency evacuation in response to a fire alarm I was appalled at the inaction and lack of urgency and duty of care by managers entrusted with that responsibility. LondonMet has the potential to rise up to a respectable standing in the league tables and to be a reputable institution especially for those students from those backgrounds unfamiliar and intimidated by the 'posh' universities. Once a good student demonstrates their mettle and achieves excellent results they will realise that universities irrespective of their prestige are there for anyone. Sadly a significant number of academic and administration staff portray an indifference and provide a poor quality of work for their students and fellow staff. Result Card: Has the potential to do better, much better. Sadly it hasn't the inclination or willpower to be positive and achieve its potential.

    Advice to Management

    The new VC Malcolm Gillies has an unenviable and difficult task that his predecessor failed to challenge. VC Gillies has to unite a university that was amalgamated over 10 years ago, yet the divisions remain and the arrogance of campus divide remain. Time to get over it. Management need to establish a root and branch review of management & administration procedures. Not to mention creating the usual best... practices of performance indicators, targets, clear communication lines, update the technology and provide their students and staff better services and provisions. Establish departmental comparisons with other HEI's for best practise ideas and concepts. Create a comprehensive Customer Relations Management system that integrates with academic and administration to provide a comprehensive flow through of students/clients. Instigate an audit of like-minded student support programme that have proliferated across all departments and campuses and identify the successful ones and integrate these programme into a more comprehensive service for students and staff. Remember "It's the students"!
