I worked at Longos part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Easy work, yearly raises, bonuses around holidays, friendly staff, flexible schedule

    Cons

disconnect between department managers, store managers, and day time workers makes it hard to talk to them as a person, very "bossy". Politics in the department are annoying to listen to and worse to be involved in. it always seems like someone has to complain about another person even for stupid things. It will take you forever to work your way up positions here

    Advice to Management

managers need to work together and with their employees to be effective, lots of them like to micro manage us too much where it feels controlling. Let your employees work. If you've trained them right they'll know what to do. Some managers know that and do it right and some don't.

I have been working at Longos part-time

    Pros

Great first job I’ve been here since I was in high school. The hours are super flexible, you get the time off when you need it. Made a lot of friends there that will be in my life for a long time.

    Cons

The management relies too much on you. They say they don’t have the hours for you, but expect everything to be done fast. They pick favourites. If they don’t like you they won’t give you the time of day. Very cliquey

    Advice to Management

Train your employees better! The turnover rate is super high because you don’t train your employees enough. Hire enough people so you have the coverage. You rely too much on staff to do all the work, but you don’t have the hours or people to help do the work. Pay more attention to your employees

I have been working at Longos part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Accommodating to Students, Friendly Coworkers, Great Learning Environment, Sometimes Work is Fun (decorating pastries, baking, etc.). Before new legislation laws in Ontario, used to offer bonuses and annually raises to students. Sometimes managers put out snacks (cake, pastries, deli meat, etc.) in the lunch room for employees.

    Cons

You are expected to do a lot of work - even when making minimum wage. Management expects top quality employees, but do not compensate you as top quality employees. Favouritism is evident and is sometimes detrimental to your work ethic (you’ll find yourself doing a lot of work while a coworker is chatting with a manager about personal things).

    Advice to Management

Treat all employees equally and fairly. Respect equal pay for equal work. Students should not be paid less than others when having to do the same work. Managers should act as they want their employees to act as well. If employees shouldn’t be gossiping, managers shouldn’t be either, etc.
