I have been working at Longtail Studios full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good start for a rookie, work with excellent, nice, progressive people around. Lean to depend on your own in the field which gives you a real opportunity to horn yourself. The location is really good as well.

    Cons

The company is still growing, the resource in terms of the expectation sometimes is insufficient. The management sometimes can be rough, and there is no experienced senior technical here in our office right now.

    Pros

Great people, great work/life balance. New York location superb. Offices in Quebec City are right in downtown and there's a good vibe there. The new studio in Halifax seems to still be building up. I gained a great foundation for what it takes to build a game from the ground up here. Lots of flexibility and the disorganization allows you to wear many hats if you like. Much less structured than a typical game studio.

    Cons

Hard to get inspired by products. Difficult to get behind amorphous (or non-existant) company mission.

    Advice to Management

Establish a more unified vision for all your products.

    Pros

Good people and genuine comradarie. People really do want to do well for their projects. Project variety.

    Cons

Promises made early in the project by management which cannot be kept later by workers assigned to the project afterwards. Workers are not very skilled in general.

I worked at Longtail Studios full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work with. Halifax is a nice location to settle down with family. Flexible hours gives you breathing room. Paid overtime is a plus and this is a reason why there is no compulsory overtime as well.

    Cons

No real projects to work with, only part time or support work.
Senior management has no vision for growth for the company.
The owner hardly shows up in the company.

    Advice to Management

Make sure there is always some project in the pipeline while the first one is about to get done. The employees wont feel that they can be laid off at any time and there would be some sense of security for the employees.

    Pros

As a small company, many things can be done swiftly.
Lots of fun with the other employees and the ambiance is awesome
Fun projects and great time realising them

    Cons

Long hours and not much felxibility about them
Management is located somewhere else wich cause a lot of problems.

    Advice to Management

Let the people do their job.
Give some power to local leadership. Most project have leads in NY while all that is done is made in Quebec City.
