I have been working at Longwood Gardens part-time

    Pros

Beautiful landscape. Very down to earth coworkers. Simple work. Usually polite/quiet visitors. Great summer job if you're over 18.

    Cons

The weather. You may have an entire 10 hour shift outside in the cold, heat, sleet, etc. several days in a row. Also shifts can vary extremely.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time introducing new managers to the grounds and their position.

I worked at Longwood Gardens part-time

    Pros

Visionary organization; always looking to make improvements to the gardens

    Cons

There is a strong social hierarchy within Longwood Gardens. While within departments there was a sense of collaboration, this was not practiced between the departments. As a custodian, I knew our department was neglected and taken advantage of. People would hand us tasks they were responsible for but didn't want to do. The administration took our office away and put our fridge in a closet with a roach problem.

A lot of the focus was on making things appear nice even when there was a underlying issue. For instance, the kitchen, which serves guests, not pass health inspections. It was incredibly dirty. Not an ethical company.

    Advice to Management

Be considerate of ALL your employees.

I worked at Longwood Gardens part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great place if you love plants and flowers
You do get complimentary tickets as a benefit Clean environment to work

    Cons

Very low pay. 11 per hour no medical benefits
Everyone is part time but a few managers. No real room for advancement to a full time position
Expectations a lot for the pay. Most people have working spouses to make ends meet
Must be in shape since a lot of walking is required

    Advice to Management

Pay a competitive rate to stop the turn over

Beautiful environment, good natured people, CEO is genuine and appreciative of staff, a lot of long-timers mean it's a place that knows how to foster people.

    Cons

Out of the way location, titles are all messed up, lots of silos.

    Advice to Management

You are good at maintaining a positive an productive work environment. Consider updating titles to standard titles used in businesses today.

I worked at Longwood Gardens part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everybody was incredibly friendly and really great. I enjoyed working there and I enjoyed working under the people I worked for.

    Cons

It was pretty boring on slow days, absolutely nothing to do and not allowed to read a book to occupy myself. It always seemed to me like it was run with a sort of organized chaos on top of the chaos that was already occurring during the season.
