I worked at Lord & Taylor part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You meet a lot of nice people and you help people find what they want which makes them happy which makes you feel good. It's a service oriented job so customer service is the number one goal!

    Cons

Some departments work on commission only, which makes the atmosphere among the employees in those areas very tense. A lot of these employees are grumpy.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge employees who are doing their job well by giving increases for individual performance. Not .05 across the board. You will increase your employees' performance.

    I worked at Lord & Taylor full-time

    Pros

Wonderful staff and great to work with! Paid well! Depending on the management team, very accommodating to work/life balance.

    Cons

Many unforeseen changes. Overall, it lowered team morale. No clear direction for the future as far as strategy or personal growth. Seemed like everyone was waiting to see what position was on the chopping block next.

I worked at Lord & Taylor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good for resume building experience, but not much else. I've worked for many retailers in my life, yet this was the worst.

    Cons

Management has unrealistic expectations of staff considering there's little business.
High turnover rate (especially in cosmetics) makes it difficult to maintain a consistent clientele base.

    Advice to Management

Stop setting such high expectations for staff, when you know the clientele is sparse and inconsistent.

I worked at Lord & Taylor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Decent discount & PTO policies

    Cons

Weak, unimaginative middle and upper management. (Many of whom were previously let-go by Macy's.) Years of startling sales trends, across all locations, previously hidden by Saks/Bay public sales reports. Hard to use PTO, as there are endless "Charity" & other Sales events. Work most/all holidays, most weekends and 2-4 evenings per week. Comp time only at Christmas, when 6 day weeks are required.

    Advice to Management

Recruit smarter, more business-focused management, rather than a succession of burned out retreads from other failing retail operations. A good manager can run anything, and doesn't need to come from retail. Plus, give up the sick "Visit Culture," where everyone works open to beyond close, preparing the store for a visit from some big wig who'll be forced out within the year. If a store is well-run, that foolishness is unnecessary.
