I worked at Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Less than a year)

    Pros

I had a great time learning a lot about the administrative side of public health. The coworkers were friendly and the work place atmosphere was nice.

    Cons

The only con is that there wasn't a realistic way to turn your internship into a job. This is because there are required exams prior to being considered for a position.

    Advice to Management

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Great flexibility in hours allows you to take time off when needed for school purposes. Coworkers are nice and great resource for learning. Maximum 30 hours a week.

    Cons

Sometimes lack of cutting edge technology. Will be placed in various areas of IT based on group that interviews you. If you interview for the tech support team, expect to be a phone tech and IT support. If you interview for web development, expect to do web dev and app dev. If you interview for network team, expect to do network support. Maximum 30 hours working a week.

    Advice to Management

No real advice to management. Despite limited hours, team leads and supervisors will assign tasks that improve your skills in various areas and are actually critical towards various department goals and not just fulfilling minor content or service tickets, although that is part of job.

    Cons

Can be hard to implement major changes to improve business processes; need to use incremental change management approach

    Advice to Management

Consider changing the way people get promotions within the department. Rely more on actual performance instead of just experience working with the department.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

It is exciting to work on programs and policy issues that will impact thousands of people in your community and it feels good to be working toward a positive good. Also, public health influences so many aspects of people's lives that there is a wide variety of fields and specializations within the Department to choose from.

    Cons

The bureaucracy and narrow ways of thinking are so frustrating. Innovation and collaboration are stifled and everything moves so sssssssslllllloooooowwwwwww! However, I think human resource management is the biggest problem. The recruitment and hiring process is so cumbersome that it seems like some of the best talent in the workforce are working elsewhere before the County can even call them back.

    Advice to Management

    Modernize recruitment and hiring.
