    "Curatorial Assistant"

    5.0
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Los Angeles County Museum of Art full-time

    Pros

Working within the galleries, and getting to see all the exhibitions! Having a great team to work with.

    Cons

Museum red tape can be a little slow. So you have to be patient in getting things accomplished, bear in mind though that they would only be well served to have someone on the team that is always striving, hustling and pushing projects through.

I worked at Los Angeles County Museum of Art part-time

    Pros

You get to see art and your badge can get you into other museums.

    Cons

The pay is low so one of the only things they can give out are titles. Due to that, those with title promotions are always on huge power trips. Departments don't get along with each other and the culture of gossip is rampant. Even some departments are split into factions that don't respect each other. The only things that get done are vanity projects (and this includes the new building). Most of the staff don't support the new building and it will almost certainly bankrupt the museum. The museum collects way too much art without devoting the resources to properly care for it or any plans to ever show it. Think Indiana Jones warehouse scene. Inept workers are promoted if they are good socializers. Hard workers are piled on until they are overwhelmed. If they don't like you, they will treat you poorly until you quit.

I worked at Los Angeles County Museum of Art full-time

    Pros

Great office environment and friendly coworkers. Easy staff parking and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. There is a department or role to handle almost everything.

    Cons

Poor consideration of individual bandwidth with some people overloaded with work while others have lax responsibilities. Promotions are few and far between if at all possible. Somewhat of a dead end job if you are looking to climb in your career.

I worked at Los Angeles County Museum of Art full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The name of working at LACMA is the only positive thing.

    Cons

Where do I start?? The culture is toxic, the pay is low and top management only cares about fulfilling their personal agendas. It is unfortunate that over the years, LACMA has gone downhill.

I worked at Los Angeles County Museum of Art part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    The organization is recognizable.

    Cons

LACMA only cares about themselves. Not the art, not the guests, and not the employees. Over worked, underpaid, no benefits, and very stressful.
