I worked at Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Making a real difference in the lives of Los Angeles County residents.

    Cons

Sheriff Jim "McBuckles" McDonnell is firing hundreds of deputy sheriffs for political gain. He wants to be known for "making a difference" and for " cleaning up the department," but he's destroying the department and adversely impacting public safety in the process. He has killed morale and proactive policing. Deputies are afraid to do the job they were sworn to do. He is spending millions of taxpayer dollars on trivial and frivolous expenses such as uniform shirts, brass belt buckles, and stickers on car doors. He is costing the county millions of dollars in wrongful termination lawsuits and civil service hearings as well as overtime costs which have soared through the roof under his watch.

Once McDonnell leaves, it will be s great place to work again. Until then, apply at your own risk.

I have been working at Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great catalogue of positions as both sworn and non-sworn. Opportunities for high and low profile positions are available. Special schedule positions are achievable if pursued.

    Cons

Promotional testing has no evaluation method to quantify individual marketable skills and experience. This creates a practice of promoting great test takers and not the best professionals for the position.

    Advice to Management

Implement a quantifiable appraisal of promotability scale to include a point based evaluation of professional experience, education, and supervisors assessment.

    Pros

Competitive Salary, Good Benefits, Lots of Time accrued, Job Security. Easy to Transfer to different locations. Lots of diverse interactions. Multitude of skills available to acquire.

    Advice to Management

Stop putting unqualified people in supervisory positions. Stop overworking your best employees and resolve workplace issues instead of sweeping them under the rug. It shouldn't take considerable amount of grief, and complaining, and multiple threats to go to the union to resolve simple issues.
