I worked in a specialized unit as a civilian and it was perfect. Lots of creative freedom, shocking for a law enforcement agency, and great leadership. Zero micromanaging. Lots of laughs every day.

Underfunded and short-staffed, some upper management are on another planet (but it's getting better), you may literally lose your life, possible PTSD in varying degrees

Unfortunately, cops are the ones running almost every type of work, even the non-law enforcement work like IT and HR. It's really hard to do right by what tax payers are paying for when no one in the department has any real technical background and each department is managed by high-ranking cops.
