I worked at Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Benefits, fun and friendly coworkers, tuition assistance if you're interested in getting your MPA

    Cons

Honestly depends what office you work at. In my experience, we had old timer supervisors who were over incoming employees. New employees were quicker, more adaptable to change, and took information in more efficiently..it can create an awkward culture. And inSANE caseloads with no help in sight. High turn over position. No room for growth.

    Advice to Management

Pay ATTENTION. You really need a refresher course in leadership. If your employees are bringing up concerns don't say "Oh, ok. We'll do something about it." 50 times and NOT do anything about it. Be straight up and WORK with your workers. If you don't work hard for them, don't expect them to work hard for you.

I worked at Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Benefits are great, union job stability; Able to help clients to some extent; Room for growth within DPSS and the county as a whole

    Cons

Sitting at a desk all day; Efficient workers can complete work in less than 40 hours per week, but because its an hourly job you still have to sit there from "9-5." Some good management and friendly staff, but some strange/rude workers too. Some of the workers are especially condescending to clients which is depressing

    Advice to Management

Make an effort to keep up worker morale. Hire people with more discernment, beyond just how they do on paper. Each new director/administrator does not need to re-invent the wheel. Provide the resources needed with the right employees and things will improve. Get rid of the call centers!

I worked at Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

I was able to help people who desperately needed help. The fellow employees were generally very pleasant and worked as a team. The pay was better than average, and the hours were normal.

    Cons

Promotion opportunities seemed to go to undeserving, political people. Clients were sometimes anti-social.

    Advice to Management

Fix the promotion process. Stop promoting the worst.

I have been working at Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits, decent pay, and fantastic 4/40 work schedule. The atmosphere is great, and there are many wonderful people with whom you can work. It is very easy to promote if you do your job well and can pass an exam based on middle school mathematics & spelling/grammar questions.

    Cons

Lack of flexibility, at times illogical procedures, and the work can be a bit repetitive. Quite severely behind the times in terms of embracing technology.

    Advice to Management

Some are much better than others. Be sure to develop actual working relationships with your subordinates.
