I have been working at Los Angeles as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Good pay. Stability. You get to do real work, not "intern" type work.

    Cons

Lack of training. Lack of on-boarding. Terrible culture and communication. Outdated technology. CYA mentality/culture. Overworked/stressed employees. Lack of work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Proper on boarding procedures and training is a must. The "sink or swim" mentality is a horrible way to start people off. If you're too busy or don't care about training your employees, then maybe you should think twice about being a "supervisor".

I have been working at Los Angeles full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good Benefits and work load

    Cons

Too political, promotion depends on who you know and which ethic group you belong.
Evaluations are written based on political correctness and hidden agenda.
Job offers are made based on political reasons.

    Advice to Management

Manage based on results and accountabilities that seem impossible due to political environment.
Management are accountable to voters regardless of its own performance.

I worked at Los Angeles full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Offered 9/80 schedule, great career opportunities, unbeatable benefits

    Cons

Lack of training for upper management: some didn't know how to use computers or open documents with Microsoft - made it difficult to expedite work flow

    Advice to Management

Provide regular training sessions for management on computer usage

I have been working at Los Angeles full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

a few managers are still with the City; you might get to work with the various consultants, who are typically very good.

    Cons

extremely poor policies regarding use of OT to get the work out; the typical supervisor has very little if any clue on how to supervise; the City's standards for supervising may be good and written, but managers and higher-level supervisors typically do not use them; poor capabilities by the Mayor and City Administrative Officer translate to poor morale and significantly reduce effectiveness at all levels - only when they have to get out of the way, or when they want something done so the Mayor can get a photo op, is something accomplished in a timely manner

    Advice to Management

Get With The Program! Enable staff to perform at a higher level by providing training, adequate computers and software, and enough OT to get the job done in a timely manner; and get some decent supervisors!!
