I have been working at Los Angeles USD part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Daytime job, perfect for college students

    Cons

Some schools (like my job) only do part-time. If you love working with kids, there is no con. There are a few issues with the administrative stuff itself and their role in the school in a few situations

I have been working at Los Angeles USD part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Like working with kids and getting to know them by name. Making sure the kids have healthy and hot lunch everyday. I treat every kid as I would treat mine with respect and caring.

    Cons

Running out of food for the kids because the supervisor didn't order enough. Having to tell the kids the menu changes for the day, to see the kids sad because they were looking forward to what was on the menu

    Advice to Management

Every year new students come into the school and it's not long before I know all of their names. It is nice to learn all of the students names.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is really good if you want to work extra- hardly anyone does. District pay is so so. Oxnard, Arcadia, etc.. pay about 18-20,000 more at the top of the pay scale.
I am at a good school which is hard to find in middle school. Actually, almost impossible to find. The kids are smart, good, it's overall a good teaching job...BUT...

    Cons

The sheer numbers of kids and paperwork/duties/responsibilities is unimaginable. The district is under fire and so they WORK you like a dog. Always being micro-managed. I have to do stupid paperwork such as keeping track of emergency forms and picture packets. Too busy for secretarial work.

    Advice to Management

I know you are under pressure so I do not have much advice. Same BS for you. However, if you want to advance and you are a white person, switch districts. Nepotism, esp. Latinos, is crazy. I saw a literacy coach who could not spell "success" on his door.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The Library Aide Union is outstanding, if you have a good principal, your job is so much better. It's a great job to bring the love of reading to children.

    Cons

not enough time in the three hour paid day to get everything done. Most Library Aides work at two schools to get their six-hour days. If you work one school, you may have weird hours (like 10am - 1pm) to be available when kids have recess. LAUSD benefits are great, but you don't get anything working three hours/day.

    Advice to Management

It's hard to get good employees, let alone retain them, if you only pay them 15 hours per week. I requested full time status over one year ago with no results. The hiring process needs to be streamlined. It's a great job if you don't need the $ to live on.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You know that you're helping children and families throughout the school year. It can be creative and inspiring.

    Cons

Constantly shifting expectations from upper administration makes it challenging to know what's coming around the corner at any moment. Getting a consistent straight answer on any question is nearly impossible.

    Advice to Management

Be more understanding to the teachers who work hard to help their students. More paperwork may cover your accountability, but it prevents us from spending more time with our students.
