I worked at Los Angeles USD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A need for experienced personnel like myself " retired Los Angeles County Police Sergeant' to assist with safety and security at school sites. Good benefits !

    Cons

Always the possibility of cut backs and lay offs by the School Board. Campuses in areas are growing more dangerous ! Serious problem with under staffing .

    Advice to Management

Invest better in the employees that make the campuses function better on a daily bases in order to prevent losing them to other Districts ,and other career choices .

I have been working at Los Angeles USD part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Daytime job, perfect for college students

    Cons

Some schools (like my job) only do part-time. If you love working with kids, there is no con. There are a few issues with the administrative stuff itself and their role in the school in a few situations

I have been working at Los Angeles USD part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The Library Aide Union is outstanding, if you have a good principal, your job is so much better. It's a great job to bring the love of reading to children.

    Cons

not enough time in the three hour paid day to get everything done. Most Library Aides work at two schools to get their six-hour days. If you work one school, you may have weird hours (like 10am - 1pm) to be available when kids have recess. LAUSD benefits are great, but you don't get anything working three hours/day.

    Advice to Management

It's hard to get good employees, let alone retain them, if you only pay them 15 hours per week. I requested full time status over one year ago with no results. The hiring process needs to be streamlined. It's a great job if you don't need the $ to live on.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You know that you're helping children and families throughout the school year. It can be creative and inspiring.

    Cons

Constantly shifting expectations from upper administration makes it challenging to know what's coming around the corner at any moment. Getting a consistent straight answer on any question is nearly impossible.

    Advice to Management

Be more understanding to the teachers who work hard to help their students. More paperwork may cover your accountability, but it prevents us from spending more time with our students.
