I worked at Loudoun County, Virginia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great healthcare benefits. There is a high level of sophistication and commitment to quality work, programs, etc. Its a fast growing place with opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of the community. Competitive salaries for the most part.

    Cons

Fast pace also means a lot of work with not enough time. Many departments are strained by high workloads.

I worked at Loudoun County, Virginia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Place to work! I had excellent relationships with the whole 5th floor, and it was a pleasure to serve the residents of the county on a daily basis.

    Cons

    Nothing. Computer wants five words.

    Advice to Management

Tim Hemstreet is a fantastic Administrator. Keep up the good work.

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

Great compensation, lots of opportunities for ongoing training. SOPs are enforced, resulting in a clean facility and a knowledgable staff. Flexible with scheduling. Really the best possible lifeguard job in the area.

    Cons

Recent management changes have not been for the better.

    Advice to Management

When choosing a manager, it's important to select someone who can serve as a fair, unbiased leader with strong interpersonal skills. Not just someone who has experience working at a pool. A lot of high quality employees have decided to leave this job due to a lack of professionalism at the supervisor level. Granted, it's a lifeguarding job, but every one of these employees is a representative of the county and the supervisors establish the mindset/attitude for the entire staff.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Loudoun County, Virginia part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work with the public, all ages from kids to seniors
Coworkers really know their stuff and are some of the nicest people you'll meet
Management fits my style- hands on when needed, otherwise gives staff what they need to do well and steps back
Room to grow is there, just need to be opportunistic and make a good case
Decent benefits- health, retirement, etc but only for full timers
    Some perks for part timers
    Flexible scheduling
Solid pay- higher than similar private sector positions in the Ed, Childcare, and Parks/Rec arenas

    Cons

None I know of but have heard internal politicking can be bad, depending on the department and it's own policies.
HR is painfully slow, particularly for PRCS and LCPS (parks and schools), likewise for other agencies I've applied to. However, talking with HR reps over the years, it seems they are often short-handed (lots of paperwork, not enough people to handle it when the glut is high).

    Advice to Management

Hire more HR staff during peak hire and transfer times, undergrad interns in that major would be ideal (can recommend a couple to your offices), revise policies to remove redundancies and superfluous steps (keep the same regulatory rigor though). More funding to the departments that serve the public most- PRCS, LCPS, water & sewer, etc, the county board doesn't need the obscene salaries they are making to sit in meetings all day, give it to those that actually drive commerce around here. As always, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" applies. Protecting rural Loudoun to the west and our green spaces needs to be a priority, otherwise we're no better than Fairfax and the counties south of us, beholden to the Fed for business, nothing but bedroom communities orbiting the bloated mess that is DC, no green to be seen anywhere.
