I worked at Loughborough University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Able to provide research software engineering support to researchers across Loughborough University and more widely in the new EPSRC Tier 2 centre HPC Midlands Plus

    Cons

Being removed from live industry causes challenges with keeping abreast of recent changes and trends, which is important on a year-on-year basis

    Advice to Management

Drop requirements for Fortran knowledge since this too specialised to be pertinent in the marketplace, especially as we move forward with AI advances

I worked at Loughborough University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good working environment with lots of opportunities. Very flexible working hours. Presenting work at conferences and working with external companies as well as other universities was encouraged

    Cons

Very flexible working hours meant it was hard to find people for meetings. Laid back approach by some members of staff meant things took ages to get done

    Advice to Management

Keep a good mix of teaching and researching academic staff

I have been working at Loughborough University part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Energetic ethos provided by students, a spacious campus and sport obsessions.

Cost of living in the East Midlands is cheap

Management is traditionally authoritarian but generally supportive.

Despite the increasing pressures on Higher Education, mostly never forgets it is a university

    Cons

If you work in a support service, very poor promotion prospects, basically you need to apply for vacancies which are few and far between.

Management is poor quality (though not necessarily intrusive). Too many academics pretending to be managers - managerialism is rife

    Advice to Management

    See above.

I worked at Loughborough University as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice university, good facilities, Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment

    Cons

At the beginning of the course I wasn't confident at all when I talked in English, but after a few months I did feel more confident so I could speak to anybody almost in any situation.

    Pros

Excellent scenery and sporting facility. Quite a friendly environment with enormous amount of team work. State of the art engineering facility.

    Cons

Job insecurity is high. Very quiet and lonely town. Little encouragement about good work done. Unnecessary training courses that waste productive time.

    Advice to Management

maintain the facility on ground. Encourage fellow researchers more about god work done. Be more concerned by researcher's well being.
