I worked at Loughborough University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Overall great environment to work in for most of staff and good modern buildings with up to date facilities in all areas.

    Cons

Not all staff groups have the same promotion and development scope due to operational management issues and as a consequence quite a few left my former department which was STEM focussed to take up other work or retire.

    Advice to Management

Treat all staff equally within your policy on equality and also make sure when issues arise due to non compliance by line managers that they are swiftly dealt with.

    Pros

Good place, learn lots. One of the best engineering universities in the uk. Have encouraging staff the genuinely want you to suceed.

    Cons

High level sport opportunities, but not for average people. Town isn't great, but students being around the town help with that. Sports facilities are expensive the hire out

I have been working at Loughborough University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As a industrial linked researcher, there is flexibility with the work.
Very friendly environment to work in.
Perks are in term of flexibility and ample holidays

    Cons

    No career path
    No promotions
    No personal growth
Role is transitional and the univeristy does not encourage RA's to stay on

    Advice to Management

Should consider that researchers are a valuable part of the organisation and change University structure to promote RA to stay on.

    Pros

Good links with industry, so some networking can provide with industrial partners for research proposals. Very competitive with other universities, hence there is always a motivation, which can be really good.

    Cons

Some departments can be biased towards some research groups, specially those which are considered the "strength of the department". So if you are in the strength groups, you would love working here, but if you are not it can be quite difficult to survive.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing in particular.
