    Approves of CEO

I worked at Loughborough University part-time

    Pros

Great opportunity to build your communication skills, meet new people, go to university fairs and facilitate events run by the university. I would recommend it.

    Cons

I dont really have any negatives, you choose your hours, events you want to be a part of. The manager is lovely, she is very communicative and nice.

    Pros

Good place, learn lots. One of the best engineering universities in the uk. Have encouraging staff the genuinely want you to suceed.

    Cons

High level sport opportunities, but not for average people. Town isn't great, but students being around the town help with that. Sports facilities are expensive the hire out

I have been working at Loughborough University as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible working hours as long as the work is done, good colleagues, interesting projects and good overall values of university and learning.

    Cons

Work load can become difficult to manage when more tasks are given . Difficult to say no when you're in a contract position but very poor (i.e. non-existent) career progression opportunities as there is no route other than a full-time academic position. Pay is poor but you don't go into academia for the money!

I have been working at Loughborough University as a contractor

    Pros

A nice place to work in a quite environment. Great opportunities in networking and spreading your research ideas/outputs in conferences throughout the world. Environment is friendly and the campus gives you great opportunities for sports.

    Cons

Depending on School, research direction could be improved by becoming more competitive and relevant. Politics, sometimes, impact research and academic decisions. Sometimes you feel you are all alone in solving the research problems without having any support.

    Advice to Management

Prioritise research impact and encourage interdisciplinary research

  9. "A nice place to work, great atmosphere on campus and behind the scenes, but muddled management needs streamlining."

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Loughborough University as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - My team has been very friendly and competent.
    - Our outfit runs pretty smoothly.
    - Customer/student feedback is almost entirely positive.

    Cons

    - Chronic mismanagement of my particular section of our department has been a near constant hindrance. Everything runs fine, then there's some upset in the management system and everything is chaos for a few days while middle-management run around doing make-work and failing to email people.

E.g. I report to three different people, all of whom have varying and overlapping duties, and occasionally contradict each other, leading to problems for my team.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate some of the middle-management problems. Yes it gives people jobs and adds an extra layer of operational abstraction, but the result is that communication and practice become muddled and confusing. Promoting people out of the way isn't always a solution. They're still there, and still capable of doing damage.

I have been working at Loughborough University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As a industrial linked researcher, there is flexibility with the work.
Very friendly environment to work in.
Perks are in term of flexibility and ample holidays

    Cons

    No career path
    No promotions
    No personal growth
Role is transitional and the univeristy does not encourage RA's to stay on

    Advice to Management

Should consider that researchers are a valuable part of the organisation and change University structure to promote RA to stay on.
