I have been working at Louisiana Public Health Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the best coworkers I have ever had. The workplace is diverse and seeks to make Louisiana a healthier state.

    Cons

A lot of the work is grant based, a loss of grant could mean a loss of income. This isn't necessarily a negative on the employer but on the realities of working for an organization that bases much of its income on grants.

I have been working at Louisiana Public Health Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Generous benefits, including flextime; depending on your supervisor, opportunity to be a big fish in a little pond; staff below director level passionate and mission driven

    Cons

Unnecessarily hierarchical and risk adverse; toxic office politics with advancement decisions based on perceived political connections as opposed to actual merit & skill; low morale and high turnover that is continuously whitewashed by management but never actually addressed; employee development and growth highly dependent on who is your supervisor

    Advice to Management

Utilize major shifts in funding to clean house/ restructure but with as much transparency as possible; hold people accountable and stop allowing some to skate by on their supposed political connections; implement a 360 review process; wake up to the fact that due to the ever-changing public health landscape we have actual competition in the city and throughout the state--stop taking things for granted and get with the times

    Pros

Coming fresh out of grad school, I learned a lot, quickly about real world implementation. Many opportunities and support for professional development.
