I worked at Lunar Design full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing people. Great energy. A project manager for every project means well planned timelines and budgets. Plenty of in-house resources including 3D printers, workshop, workspace, access to engineering, strategy thinkers etc. Range of projects. Great physical space.

    Cons

Times are changing. Projects are leaning more toward infrastructure and industrial level problem solving, strategy and design thinking rather than aesthetic design or consumer facing solutions since McKinsey purchased Lunar. McKinsey HR and internal management systems are sluggish at best and a bit oppressive to the creative Lunar culture.

    Advice to Management

Bring in exciting consumer facing projects and you will retain better design and engineering talent. Retain the rich Lunar culture and independence. Don't let the McKinsey money making machine of systematic efficiency oppress the things that made Lunar great. Seek a better balance.

I have been working at Lunar Design as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun high level design. Beautiful upscale work environment really makes you feel special working there.

    Cons

Egos are rampant among many of the veteran designers and engineers there. Also they are very very cold to Contract designers making sure they know they are not invited to full-time employee lunches, meetings, etc. This strategy on one hand makes you want to work for them full-time so you are not the outcast, but on the other hand it comes off as a grade school click of a team.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to get to know your contract employees because they may have more talent then just your judgement of their outward appearance.

I worked at Lunar Design as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you like the old-school, "throw it over the wall" design process, this is the place for you. The division of responsibilities is clear.

    Cons

Poor project management, unenlightened team dynamics. If you want to work in an integrated design environment, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Don't change a thing. The world needs utilitarian design consulting companies to handle the mass of uninspired projects.

    Pros

The people are what truly make Lunar great. Not only are they some of the best and brightest at what they do, but they are a genuine pleasure to be around. Exciting projects, open collaboration, happy employees leads to fantastic results.

    Cons

You only get to work on client projects, there should be in house projects! More opportunities to work across disciplines and pick up new skills would also be good.
